Nipple pain?
Hello doctor, I am 22 years old and I have a small lump on the left side of my nipple that has been painful for the past two weeks.
What could this be? If I need to go to the hospital for an examination, which department should I visit? Thank you!

Dr. Cai Jueren reply Family Medicine
Hello, small lumps on the nipple should not be taken lightly.
If there is tenderness, it may indicate an inflammatory response, possibly mastitis or sebaceous gland inflammation.
Of course, there are other possibilities that need to be evaluated through further examinations.
It is recommended that you promptly visit a dermatology clinic to address the issue.
Thank you for your inquiry.

Hello! Thank you for reaching out with your concerns about the painful lump in your left nipple. It's understandable to feel worried when experiencing unusual symptoms, especially in a sensitive area like the breast.
Based on your description, the painful lump you are experiencing could be due to several potential causes. One common condition in males is gynecomastia, which is the enlargement of breast tissue. This can sometimes present as a lump under the nipple and may be accompanied by tenderness or pain. Gynecomastia can occur due to hormonal imbalances, certain medications, or other underlying health issues.
Another possibility is a condition known as mastitis, which is an infection of the breast tissue that can cause swelling, pain, and sometimes discharge. While mastitis is more common in women, it can occur in men as well, particularly if there is a history of trauma or infection in the area.
Additionally, it is important to consider the possibility of a benign tumor, such as a lipoma or cyst, which can also present as a lump and may be painful when touched. In rare cases, breast cancer can occur in men, although it is significantly less common than in women.
Given that you have been experiencing this symptom for two weeks, it is advisable to seek medical attention. You should consider visiting a healthcare provider who specializes in breast health or general surgery. In many healthcare systems, you can start with a visit to your primary care physician, who can then refer you to a specialist if necessary. If you have access to a breast clinic, that would be an excellent option as well.
During your appointment, the doctor will likely perform a physical examination and may ask about your medical history, any medications you are taking, and any other symptoms you might be experiencing. Depending on the findings, they may recommend imaging studies, such as an ultrasound or mammogram, to further evaluate the lump.
It is important not to ignore this symptom, especially since it has persisted for two weeks. Early evaluation can help determine the cause of the lump and guide appropriate treatment if necessary. Remember, while it is natural to feel anxious about health concerns, seeking medical advice is the best way to address your worries and ensure your well-being.
In summary, I recommend that you schedule an appointment with a healthcare provider as soon as possible. They will be able to provide you with a thorough evaluation and the necessary steps to address your symptoms. Take care, and I hope you find relief soon!
