Dr. Ye Qingnian reply Orthopedics

Human height growth is regulated by the growth plates in the bones.
Once the growth plates fuse, it is no longer possible to increase height.
At 22 years old, your growth plates have completely fused, and you cannot grow taller.
Some individuals have undergone surgical procedures to break the tibia and fibula and then use bone grafts to gradually lengthen the legs; however, this method has numerous side effects, such as non-union of the bones, inflammation, deformity, and nerve damage, which can lead to disability.
The best advice now is to monitor your future children's height.
If you notice significant deviations from the normal height range during their elementary school years, take them to see a pediatrician to determine if growth hormone injections are necessary to assist with height growth.
Since your growth plates have fused, growth hormone injections are no longer an option for you.

When it comes to increasing height, especially for adults, it's essential to understand the biological limitations and the factors that influence growth. By the age of 22, as you mentioned, most individuals have likely experienced the closure of their growth plates, which typically occurs in late adolescence. Once these growth plates are closed, the potential for natural height increase is significantly diminished.

Understanding Growth Plates and Height Increase
Growth plates, or epiphyseal plates, are areas of developing cartilage tissue located near the ends of long bones. During childhood and adolescence, these plates allow for the elongation of bones, contributing to height increase. Once the growth plates close, which can happen as early as 16 for females and 18-25 for males, the bones can no longer grow in length. Therefore, any claims suggesting that one can significantly increase height after this closure should be approached with skepticism.

The Role of Intervertebral Discs
Some theories suggest that the thickness of intervertebral discs (the cushions between the vertebrae) can be increased through specific exercises or stretching techniques. While it is true that certain activities can promote better posture and spinal alignment, leading to a temporary increase in height due to disc decompression, this effect is generally minimal. The increase in height from improved posture or spinal decompression typically ranges from 1 to 2 centimeters at most and is not a permanent solution.

Effective Strategies for Height Perception
1. Posture Improvement: Maintaining good posture can make a significant difference in how tall you appear. Standing up straight, keeping your shoulders back, and aligning your head over your spine can enhance your overall appearance and may add a few centimeters to your perceived height.

2. Strengthening Exercises: Engaging in exercises that strengthen the core and back muscles can support better posture. Activities like yoga, Pilates, and specific strength training can help improve your spinal alignment.

3. Stretching: While stretching exercises may not increase your height, they can help improve flexibility and posture. Incorporating stretches that target the spine and legs can help you feel more elongated.

4. Nutrition: A balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals, particularly calcium and vitamin D, is crucial for bone health. While this won't increase your height after growth plate closure, it can help maintain strong bones and overall health.

5. Hydration and Sleep: Staying well-hydrated and ensuring you get adequate sleep are essential for overall health. Sleep is particularly important for recovery and growth hormone production, which can indirectly support your body's health.

Conclusion
In summary, while there are no guaranteed methods to increase height after the growth plates have closed, focusing on posture, core strength, and overall health can help you maximize your height potential and improve your appearance. If you're considering any specific programs or exercises that claim to significantly increase height, it's advisable to consult with a healthcare professional or orthopedic specialist to ensure that they are safe and effective. Remember, confidence and self-acceptance are crucial, and height does not define your worth or capabilities.

Doctor, how can I make my legs longer? I’ve read online that reducing salt intake, stretching in the morning, and using stairs can be effective. Is this true? Will stretching the calf muscles make them longer? What else can I do to increase my height? Thank you, doctor.

Exercise stimulates bone growth, and adequate nutrition also plays a significant role. Stretching may not necessarily be effective. Height is related to genetics, and generally, the height of parents influences the height of their children.
