Hello Dr.
Tsai,
I have been experiencing edema (in my face and legs).
Could this indicate a problem with my kidneys? What foods should I eat to enhance my kidney function? Are there any foods I should avoid? I am already overweight (164 cm / 63 kg).

Hello! Poor kidney function can indeed lead to edema; however, edema is not always caused by impaired kidney function.
It can also result from poor blood circulation or heart function.
The kidneys are responsible for metabolizing nitrogenous waste, so it's important to avoid excessive salt and fatty foods, monitor your blood pressure, and engage in appropriate physical activity.
Based on your height and weight, your BMI is 23.4, which is still within the normal range.
If the "swelling" is due to higher body fat, then reducing edema will not decrease your weight; instead, you should focus on reducing caloric intake and increasing exercise to build muscle, which will make your body appear much leaner.
The same weight can occupy a larger volume when it is fat.
The kidneys are silent organs, and when they are not functioning well, you may not feel any symptoms.
Therefore, it is still advisable to visit a clinic for a proper diagnosis from a physician for your safety.
