Excessive Sleepiness and Nausea: Common Causes and Concerns - Family Medicine

excuse me?

I would like to ask the doctor why I feel very sleepy? Even when I have had enough sleep, I still feel very drowsy, especially when I am reading.
Additionally, sometimes when I brush my teeth, I feel nauseous (even when I haven't eaten anything).
There are times when I want to go buy breakfast, but I feel nauseous, which makes me worry about whether I should eat (afraid that I will vomit it out...
although I haven't done so yet).
Doctor, what illness do I have?

Jane, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2007/01/25

Dr. Cai Jueren reply Family Medicine

Hello: Your sleep quality may be an issue; you can visit a sleep center at a major hospital for some evaluations.
Additionally, if you feel nauseous while brushing your teeth, I recommend changing your toothpaste to a different flavor, as various scents can elicit different reactions.
It is possible that the taste of the toothpaste is causing your nausea.
Thank you for your inquiry, and I hope the above information addresses your concerns.

Excessive sleepiness and nausea can be concerning symptoms that may arise from various underlying conditions. It’s important to consider both physical and psychological factors that could contribute to your experiences.
Firstly, excessive sleepiness, even after a full night’s sleep, can be attributed to several factors. One common cause is sleep disorders, such as sleep apnea, where breathing is interrupted during sleep, leading to poor sleep quality and excessive daytime sleepiness. Other sleep disorders include narcolepsy, which is characterized by sudden bouts of sleep, and insomnia, which can lead to feelings of fatigue despite adequate sleep duration.
Additionally, lifestyle factors such as poor sleep hygiene, irregular sleep schedules, and high levels of stress can significantly impact your sleep quality. For instance, if you are studying or engaging in mentally taxing activities, your brain may become fatigued, leading to a desire to sleep. It’s also worth noting that certain medications, particularly those that affect the central nervous system, can cause drowsiness as a side effect.
On the other hand, the nausea you experience, especially when brushing your teeth or when you are hungry, could be related to several issues. One possibility is a condition known as "morning sickness," which is not limited to pregnancy but can occur due to various gastrointestinal issues or anxiety. If you are feeling anxious about eating or experiencing nausea, it may create a cycle where the fear of vomiting leads to avoidance of food, which can exacerbate nausea.

Another potential cause of nausea could be related to gastrointestinal problems, such as gastritis or acid reflux, which can cause discomfort and a feeling of nausea, particularly when your stomach is empty. Additionally, if you are experiencing anxiety or stress, this can also manifest physically as nausea.
It’s essential to consider your overall health, including any recent changes in your lifestyle, diet, or stress levels. If you have been under increased stress or have experienced significant life changes, this could contribute to both your excessive sleepiness and nausea.
To address these symptoms, I recommend the following steps:
1. Consult a Healthcare Professional: It’s crucial to discuss your symptoms with a healthcare provider who can conduct a thorough evaluation, including a physical examination and possibly some tests to rule out any underlying medical conditions.

2. Sleep Hygiene: Ensure you are practicing good sleep hygiene. This includes maintaining a consistent sleep schedule, creating a comfortable sleep environment, and avoiding stimulants like caffeine close to bedtime.

3. Dietary Considerations: Pay attention to your diet. Eating small, frequent meals can help manage nausea. If you find certain foods trigger your nausea, it may be helpful to keep a food diary to identify patterns.

4. Stress Management: Engage in stress-reducing activities such as mindfulness, meditation, or gentle exercise, which can help alleviate both anxiety and physical symptoms.

5. Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of when your symptoms occur and any potential triggers. This information can be valuable for your healthcare provider in determining the cause of your symptoms.

In summary, excessive sleepiness and nausea can stem from various causes, including sleep disorders, lifestyle factors, and gastrointestinal issues. It’s essential to consult with a healthcare professional to identify the underlying cause and develop an appropriate treatment plan. Taking proactive steps to improve your sleep hygiene, manage stress, and monitor your dietary habits can also contribute to alleviating your symptoms.
