Height increase
Hello Doctor, I would like to ask if there are any methods for me to increase my height.
I am currently 26 years old and 164 cm tall.
I would like to grow to at least 170 cm.
Is there any way to achieve this?

Dr. Huang Longde reply Orthopedics
The growth plates of tall individuals typically fuse between the ages of 16 and 20.
At this point, no amount of medication, nutrition, or physical stimulation can increase height.
Currently popular limb-lengthening surgeries are not recommended solely for height increase, as they require prolonged use of external fixation, which can lead to complications such as infections, muscle atrophy, and nerve damage.
The risks are too high.

More Info
At the age of 26, the likelihood of further height increase is generally very low for most individuals. By this age, the growth plates in the long bones, known as epiphyseal plates, typically close after puberty, which means that the bones can no longer grow in length. This closure usually occurs around the ages of 18 to 25 for most people, with variations depending on genetics and sex. For men, growth plates usually close later than for women, but by 26, it is highly probable that yours have already fused.
In your case, standing at 164 cm and wishing to reach 170 cm, it is important to understand that while some individuals may experience slight height changes due to factors like posture or spinal decompression and compression throughout the day, significant increases in height after the growth plates have closed are unlikely. The small variations in height that some people experience can be attributed to factors such as hydration levels, time of day, and even the method of measurement.
If you are concerned about your height or are seeking ways to appear taller, there are a few options you might consider, although they do not involve actual bone growth:
1. Posture Improvement: Good posture can significantly affect how tall you appear. Engaging in exercises that strengthen your core and back muscles can help you maintain an upright posture, which can make you look taller.
2. Stretching Exercises: While stretching will not increase your height, it can improve your flexibility and posture. Activities like yoga or Pilates can help elongate your spine and improve your overall body alignment.
3. Footwear Choices: Wearing shoes with thicker soles or heels can provide a few extra centimeters. There are also specialized insoles designed to add height discreetly.
4. Healthy Lifestyle: Maintaining a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals, particularly calcium and vitamin D, is essential for bone health. While this will not increase your height at this stage, it can help ensure that your bones remain strong and healthy.
5. Consult a Specialist: If you have concerns about your height or overall health, it may be beneficial to consult with an endocrinologist or a specialist in metabolic disorders. They can evaluate your growth history and any underlying health issues that may be affecting your height.
6. Surgical Options: There are surgical procedures available for height increase, such as limb lengthening surgery. However, these procedures are invasive, carry risks, and require a significant recovery period. They are typically considered only in extreme cases and should be approached with caution.
In summary, while the possibility of growing taller at 26 is minimal, focusing on posture, lifestyle choices, and consulting with healthcare professionals can help you feel more confident about your height. Remember that height does not define your worth or capabilities, and embracing your unique attributes is essential for self-esteem and confidence.
