Growing taller
I watched an advertisement on Dongsen Shopping last night about height-increasing products.
They claimed that teenagers over 10 years old could grow more than 10 centimeters, and even people in their 20s and 30s could increase their height by 2 to 4 centimeters.
Is this really possible, or is it just exaggerated advertising? They even had testimonials from people who claimed to have grown taller.
Could there be any truth to this, or have they undergone some procedures? I'm a 25-year-old male who really wants to grow taller.

Dr. Zhang Shengben reply Orthopedics
Individuals who have not fully developed can still grow taller because their growth plates have not yet fused.
Once the growth plates fuse, it becomes nearly impossible to grow taller.
If there are any questions, it is advisable to consult an orthopedic specialist nearby.

The question of whether one can grow taller after the age of 25 is a common concern, especially among young adults who may feel self-conscious about their height. To address this, it is essential to understand the biological processes involved in growth and the factors that influence height.
Firstly, human growth occurs primarily during childhood and adolescence, driven by the growth plates (epiphyseal plates) located at the ends of long bones. These growth plates are areas of cartilage that allow bones to lengthen as a person grows. In general, for most individuals, these growth plates close after puberty, typically between the ages of 18 and 25. Once the growth plates are closed, which is usually the case by the mid-20s, further height increase is unlikely. Therefore, for a 25-year-old male, the chances of growing taller are minimal, as the growth plates are likely to have fused.
The advertisements you mentioned, which claim that height-increasing products can help individuals grow taller even in their 20s and 30s, should be approached with skepticism. Many of these products are marketed with exaggerated claims and lack scientific backing. The idea that one can grow several centimeters after the growth plates have closed is largely a myth. While some products may contain vitamins and minerals that are essential for overall health, they do not have the power to stimulate growth in adults whose growth plates have already fused.
Moreover, the perception of height can sometimes be influenced by posture and body composition. Engaging in exercises that promote good posture, such as yoga or pilates, can help individuals appear taller and more confident. Additionally, maintaining a healthy weight and muscle tone can also affect how one's height is perceived.
If you are still concerned about your height or are considering any interventions, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare professional, preferably an orthopedic specialist. They can assess your growth plates through imaging studies, such as X-rays, to determine whether they are still open. However, it is crucial to have realistic expectations and understand that any claims of significant height increase after the age of 25 are likely unfounded.
In summary, while it is natural to desire to grow taller, especially in a society that often places emphasis on height, the biological reality is that significant height increases after the age of 25 are improbable. Instead of focusing on height, it may be more beneficial to concentrate on aspects of health and wellness that can enhance your overall quality of life, such as nutrition, exercise, and mental well-being.
