Height issues~
Hello, doctor! I'm 22 years old this year! I know that height is closely related to genetics, daily routines, and exercise.
I feel quite normal already, but I still want to ask if you have any tips for increasing height.
I'm open to anything and willing to try, even if it only works a little bit! Thank you for your help!
Sheng, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2008/05/13
Dr. Lai Junlong reply Family Medicine
Hello: In response to your question, I recommend that you visit a pediatric growth and development assessment clinic for a bone age X-ray examination to check if the growth plates have fused.
Generally, most individuals have fused by the age of 15 or 16, making it unlikely for further height increase.
Additionally, I do not recommend growth hormone therapy, as it can lead to acromegaly (enlargement of extremities, earlobes, etc.).
Wishing you good health.

More Info
At 22 years old, the likelihood of significantly increasing your height is quite low due to the natural closure of growth plates in the bones, which typically occurs in late adolescence. However, there are still some strategies you can adopt to maximize your potential and improve your overall posture and appearance, which may give the illusion of added height.
Understanding Growth Plates and Height Potential
Growth in height is primarily determined by the growth plates (epiphyseal plates) located at the ends of long bones. In males, these plates usually close around the age of 18 to 21. Once they are closed, no further increase in height can occur through natural growth. This is a biological process that is largely influenced by genetics, nutrition, and hormonal factors during the growth years.
Tips for Maximizing Height Potential and Improving Posture
1. Posture Improvement: Good posture can make a significant difference in how tall you appear. Practice standing and sitting up straight, with your shoulders back and your head held high. Exercises that strengthen your core and back muscles, such as planks and back extensions, can help improve your posture.
2. Stretching Exercises: While stretching won't increase your height, it can help improve your posture and flexibility. Incorporate yoga or Pilates into your routine, focusing on stretches that elongate the spine and improve overall body alignment.
3. Strength Training: Engaging in strength training can help build muscle and improve your overall physique. Focus on exercises that strengthen your back, shoulders, and core, which can contribute to better posture.
4. Nutrition: Although you may not be able to grow taller, maintaining a balanced diet rich in essential nutrients can help you achieve your best physical condition. Ensure you are getting enough calcium, vitamin D, protein, and other vitamins and minerals that support bone health. Foods such as dairy products, leafy greens, lean meats, and fish are excellent choices.
5. Adequate Sleep: Sleep is crucial for overall health and well-being. Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night, as this is when your body repairs itself and maintains hormonal balance.
6. Hydration: Staying well-hydrated is important for overall health. Water helps maintain the elasticity of your tissues and can aid in digestion and nutrient absorption.
7. Avoid Growth Myths: Be cautious of products or treatments that claim to increase height after the growth plates have closed. Many of these are unproven and can be a waste of money. Instead, focus on healthy lifestyle choices that promote overall well-being.
8. Consult a Healthcare Professional: If you have concerns about your height or growth, consider consulting with a healthcare provider or an endocrinologist. They can assess your growth history, bone age, and overall health to provide personalized advice.
Psychological Aspects
It's also important to address the psychological aspects of height concerns. Society often places a high value on height, but self-esteem and confidence come from various attributes beyond physical appearance. Focus on developing your skills, talents, and personality traits that make you unique. Engaging in activities that boost your confidence, such as public speaking or joining clubs, can also help shift your focus from height to personal growth.
Conclusion
While the chances of growing taller at 22 are slim, adopting a healthy lifestyle can enhance your overall appearance and well-being. Focus on posture, nutrition, and physical fitness, and remember that confidence and self-acceptance are key to feeling good about yourself, regardless of your height. Embrace your unique qualities and continue to strive for personal growth in all areas of your life.
