Regarding labor-induced asthma 200?
Hello, pharmacist.
Recently, I've been experiencing difficulty breathing along with some chest tightness and pain, so I visited a pulmonologist.
The doctor prescribed me an inhaled asthma medication called Berodual 200, 15 micrograms.
I would like to ask if this asthma medication contains any corticosteroid components? Also, I've heard that using medications that contain corticosteroids can lead to weight gain.
Is this true? Thank you for your help!

Dr. Zhuo Wenhui reply Pharmacology
Hello, Junjun.
The bronchodilator you mentioned is a short-acting agent that does not contain steroids and can quickly relieve asthma caused by bronchospasm.
Short-term use of steroids is unlikely to cause weight gain.
If your doctor recommends the use of steroids, please follow their instructions.
Once your symptoms improve, your doctor will help you discontinue the medication.

More Info
Beclomethasone, the active ingredient in Beclo-Asthma 200, is indeed a type of corticosteroid. Corticosteroids are a class of steroid hormones that are produced in the adrenal cortex and are involved in a variety of physiological processes, including the regulation of inflammation and immune response. In the context of asthma treatment, inhaled corticosteroids like Beclomethasone are commonly prescribed to help reduce inflammation in the airways, making it easier to breathe and preventing asthma attacks.
Inhaled corticosteroids are generally considered safe and effective for managing asthma symptoms. They work by reducing inflammation and swelling in the airways, which helps to prevent asthma symptoms such as wheezing, coughing, and shortness of breath. Unlike systemic corticosteroids (which are taken orally or injected and affect the entire body), inhaled corticosteroids primarily target the lungs, which minimizes the risk of systemic side effects.
Regarding your concern about weight gain, it is important to note that while systemic corticosteroids are known to cause weight gain and other side effects due to their effects on metabolism and appetite, inhaled corticosteroids like Beclomethasone are less likely to cause significant weight gain. The reason for this is that the dose delivered to the systemic circulation is much lower than that of oral or injected steroids. However, some individuals may experience mild weight gain or changes in appetite, but this is not as common or pronounced as with systemic corticosteroids.
Weight gain associated with corticosteroid use can be influenced by several factors, including diet, physical activity, and individual metabolic responses. If you are concerned about weight gain while using Beclomethasone or any other medication, it is advisable to discuss this with your healthcare provider. They can provide guidance on maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including dietary recommendations and exercise plans, to help mitigate any potential weight gain.
In summary, Beclomethasone in Beclo-Asthma 200 is a corticosteroid that is effective for managing asthma symptoms. While there is a potential for weight gain with corticosteroid use, inhaled forms like Beclomethasone are less likely to cause significant weight changes compared to systemic corticosteroids. Always consult with your healthcare provider for personalized advice and to address any concerns you may have regarding your medication and its effects.
