PRILTHMOW TABLETS

I have inflammation at the base of my tongue and took PRILTHMOW TABLETS.
I found online that this medication contains steroids, but don't steroids cause weight gain?

Jian Yan Ning, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2018/09/08

Dr. Liao Lingmei reply Pharmacology

Hello: Is it "PRITHMOW"? I couldn't find any information on the medication "PRILTHMOW." The steroid component Prednisolone is quite effective for relieving acute inflammation.
If used as directed by a physician and not abused long-term on your own, there shouldn't be too much concern.
Wishing you good health and happiness!

PRILTHMOW Tablets, which contain the steroid prednisolone, are often prescribed for their anti-inflammatory properties. Steroids like prednisolone can indeed lead to weight gain, but it's essential to understand the context and mechanisms behind this side effect.

Corticosteroids, such as prednisolone, are synthetic versions of hormones that are naturally produced by the adrenal glands. They are commonly used to treat a variety of conditions, including inflammation, autoimmune diseases, and allergies. While they are effective in reducing inflammation and suppressing the immune response, they also come with a range of potential side effects, one of which is weight gain.

Weight gain associated with steroid use can occur for several reasons:
1. Increased Appetite: One of the most common side effects of corticosteroids is an increase in appetite. Patients often report feeling hungrier than usual, which can lead to overeating and subsequent weight gain.

2. Fluid Retention: Steroids can cause the body to retain sodium and water, leading to swelling and an increase in body weight. This is often temporary and may resolve after discontinuation of the medication.

3. Fat Redistribution: Long-term use of corticosteroids can lead to changes in body composition, including fat redistribution. Patients may notice an increase in abdominal fat, a rounded face (often referred to as "moon facies"), and fat accumulation in the neck and back (sometimes called "buffalo hump"). This redistribution can make individuals appear heavier, even if their overall weight does not change significantly.

4. Metabolic Changes: Corticosteroids can affect metabolism, leading to increased fat storage and changes in how the body processes carbohydrates. This can contribute to weight gain and, in some cases, insulin resistance.

It's important to note that not everyone who takes corticosteroids will experience significant weight gain. The extent of weight gain can depend on the dose, duration of treatment, individual metabolism, and lifestyle factors such as diet and physical activity levels.
If you are concerned about weight gain while taking PRILTHMOW Tablets, it is crucial to discuss this with your healthcare provider. They can provide guidance on managing your weight, including dietary recommendations and the importance of regular physical activity. Additionally, if the weight gain becomes problematic, your doctor may consider adjusting your medication or exploring alternative treatments.

In summary, while PRILTHMOW Tablets, due to their corticosteroid content, can lead to weight gain, this effect can be managed with appropriate lifestyle changes and medical guidance. It's essential to weigh the benefits of the medication against the potential side effects and to have open communication with your healthcare provider about any concerns you may have.
