Birthmark issues?

There is a black-gray birthmark on the back of my left hand, approximately 3x1.5 cm.
I would like to have it removed, but I'm unsure if the dermatology department at Keelung Hospital can perform laser treatment on the same day as the consultation, or if I need to schedule a separate appointment.
Due to work commitments, I can only see a doctor on weekends.
I would like to know if the dermatology department has weekend clinics.

Baobao, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2008/09/07

Dr. Cai Changlin reply Dermatology

Hello: Regarding your question, there are many types of birthmarks, and each type requires a different treatment approach.
Additionally, many of them cannot be resolved in a single session; a face-to-face evaluation and discussion are necessary to determine the most suitable method for you.
As for the treatment schedule, it typically requires a separate appointment.
Our dermatology department has outpatient services on Saturday mornings, but sometimes we may be closed due to meetings or other official duties.
I recommend checking online or calling to confirm your appointment before coming in to avoid any inconvenience.
Wishing you all the best.

When it comes to laser treatment for birthmarks, particularly for a nevus or pigmented lesion on the skin, there are several factors to consider, especially regarding scheduling and the specifics of the treatment itself.

Firstly, it's essential to understand that laser treatment for birthmarks is a specialized procedure that typically requires a thorough evaluation by a dermatologist. This evaluation is crucial to determine the type of birthmark, its depth, and the appropriate laser technology to use. In your case, you mentioned having a black-gray birthmark measuring approximately 3x1.5 cm on the back of your left hand. The effectiveness of laser treatment can vary based on the characteristics of the birthmark, including its color, size, and depth in the skin.

Regarding your question about scheduling the treatment on weekends, many dermatology clinics, including hospitals, may have limited hours on weekends. While some may offer weekend appointments, others might only provide consultations and not the actual treatment on the same day. It's advisable to contact the dermatology department of the hospital directly to inquire about their weekend availability for both consultations and treatments. They can provide specific information on whether you can have the laser treatment on the same day as your consultation or if you would need to schedule a separate appointment.

In general, if you are considering laser treatment for your birthmark, here are some important points to keep in mind:
1. Consultation: During your initial consultation, the dermatologist will assess your birthmark and discuss the potential risks and benefits of laser treatment. They will also review your medical history and any previous treatments you may have undergone.

2. Treatment Plan: If laser treatment is deemed appropriate, the dermatologist will create a tailored treatment plan. This plan may include the type of laser to be used, the number of sessions required, and the expected outcomes.

3. Multiple Sessions: It's common for laser treatments to require multiple sessions for optimal results, especially for deeper or larger birthmarks. The sessions are usually spaced several weeks apart to allow the skin to heal.

4. Post-Treatment Care: After the laser treatment, proper aftercare is crucial to minimize the risk of complications and ensure the best results. This may include avoiding sun exposure, using sunscreen, and following any specific instructions provided by your dermatologist.

5. Potential Side Effects: Like any medical procedure, laser treatment can have side effects, including redness, swelling, and temporary changes in skin pigmentation. It's important to discuss these potential side effects with your dermatologist.

6. Realistic Expectations: While many patients see significant improvement after laser treatment, complete removal of the birthmark may not always be possible. It's essential to have realistic expectations and understand that results can vary from person to person.

In summary, while you may be able to get laser treatment for your birthmark, it is crucial to first have a consultation with a dermatologist to assess your specific situation. Contact the dermatology department of your chosen hospital to confirm their weekend availability for both consultations and treatments. This will help you plan accordingly, considering your work schedule.
