Ganglion cyst
I have developed a ganglion cyst on the outer side of my left wrist.
Besides feeling weaker and experiencing some pain when lifting heavy objects, it hasn't affected me much otherwise.
A friend suggested using Salonpas, and after about a week, it seemed to disappear, but it reappeared after two months.
If I leave it untreated, will it have any effects, or will it recur after surgery? What causes ganglion cysts to form?

A ganglion cyst, also known as a synovial cyst, commonly occurs in individuals aged 20 to 50, with a prevalence in females that is twice that of males.
The exact cause of its formation remains undetermined in the medical field, but it is clinically believed to have some association with injury.
Common locations for these cysts include the wrist, hand, and knee, making it one of the most frequent benign tumors of the wrist.
They often lead to joint pain and weakness, and treatment is necessary if they interfere with daily life.
In terms of treatment, medication is generally ineffective.
Initial management typically involves aspiration of the cyst contents followed by compression for a period of time.
If the cyst recurs, surgical excision may be required.
In some cases, surgery is performed directly without prior aspiration, as the aspiration and compression method has a recurrence rate of about 50%.
Surgical excision, depending on the type of anesthesia used, has a recurrence rate ranging from 5% to 20%, indicating that it is a tumor with a high recurrence rate.
If the cyst causes significant discomfort, increases in size, or the patient expresses concern, further intervention is warranted.

More Info
Ganglion cysts, often referred to as "tendon sheath tumors," are fluid-filled sacs that commonly develop near joints or tendons, particularly in the wrists and hands. They are benign and typically arise from the synovial fluid that lubricates the joints and tendons. Understanding the causes, symptoms, and treatment options for ganglion cysts can help you make informed decisions about your health.
Causes of Ganglion Cysts
The exact cause of ganglion cysts is not fully understood, but several factors may contribute to their development:
1. Joint or Tendon Irritation: Repetitive movements or overuse of a joint can lead to irritation and the formation of a cyst. This is particularly common in individuals who engage in activities that require repetitive wrist motions, such as typing or playing musical instruments.
2. Joint Injury: Previous injuries to the joint or tendon can also increase the likelihood of developing a ganglion cyst. Trauma may cause the synovial fluid to leak out and form a cyst.
3. Genetic Predisposition: Some individuals may have a genetic tendency to develop ganglion cysts, although this is not a definitive cause.
4. Underlying Conditions: Conditions such as arthritis or other joint disorders may also contribute to the formation of ganglion cysts.
Symptoms of Ganglion Cysts
Ganglion cysts can vary in size and may cause different symptoms, including:
- Visible Lump: The most noticeable symptom is a lump or swelling near a joint or tendon, often on the wrist or hand.
- Pain or Discomfort: While many ganglion cysts are painless, they can cause discomfort, especially when pressure is applied or when engaging in certain activities.
- Weakness: As you mentioned, you may experience weakness in the affected hand, particularly when lifting heavy objects.
- Numbness or Tingling: In some cases, if the cyst compresses nearby nerves, it can lead to sensations of numbness or tingling.
Treatment Options
The treatment for ganglion cysts can vary based on the severity of symptoms and the impact on daily activities:
1. Observation: If the cyst is not causing significant pain or functional impairment, doctors may recommend simply monitoring it. Many ganglion cysts resolve on their own over time.
2. Non-Surgical Treatments:
- Aspiration: A healthcare provider may use a needle to drain the fluid from the cyst. This can provide temporary relief, but cysts often recur.
- Injection: Corticosteroid injections may help reduce inflammation and discomfort.
- Topical Treatments: Some individuals find relief using topical analgesics, such as the Salonpas patches you mentioned, which can help alleviate pain.
3. Surgery: If the cyst is painful, recurrent, or affecting your daily activities, surgical removal may be recommended. Surgery involves excising the cyst and its stalk to prevent recurrence. While surgery is generally effective, there is still a chance that the cyst may return.
Recurrence and Prognosis
Ganglion cysts can recur even after treatment, particularly if the underlying causes (like joint irritation) are not addressed. If you choose to leave the cyst untreated, it may not cause significant issues, but it could potentially grow larger or become more painful over time.
In summary, while ganglion cysts are typically benign and may not require immediate intervention, it's essential to monitor their size and symptoms. If you experience increased pain, weakness, or functional limitations, consulting with a healthcare provider for further evaluation and potential treatment options is advisable. Regular follow-ups can help manage the condition effectively and address any concerns that arise.
