Does taking medication cause hair loss?
Hello, Doctor.
The medication labeled on the bag as "可悅您膜衣錠" is in English "Cozaar 50mg/tab (Losartan)," and "福流持續釋放錠" is "Forflow 400mg/tab-健 (Pentoxifylline)." The dosage for both is twice a day, and I have been using them for nearly six months.
I would like to know if taking these two medications could lead to hair loss or accelerate hair loss.
Thank you again, Dr.
Jiang, for your patient responses to my questions.
Thank you!

Cozaar (Losartan) and Forflow (Pentoxifylline) are medications that are primarily used for managing hypertension and improving blood flow, respectively. Concerns about hair loss as a side effect of these medications are not uncommon among patients. However, based on current medical literature and clinical experience, neither Cozaar nor Forflow is typically associated with hair loss.
Losartan, an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB), is mainly prescribed to treat high blood pressure and to protect the kidneys in patients with diabetes. The side effects of Losartan are generally mild and can include dizziness, fatigue, and gastrointestinal issues, but hair loss is not commonly reported. In fact, some studies suggest that ARBs may have a protective effect on hair follicles due to their ability to improve blood circulation and reduce inflammation.
Pentoxifylline, on the other hand, is a medication that improves blood flow by decreasing blood viscosity and increasing red blood cell flexibility. It is often used in patients with peripheral vascular disease. Similar to Losartan, the side effects of Pentoxifylline are usually mild and can include nausea, headache, and flushing. Hair loss is not a recognized side effect of this medication either.
It is essential to consider that hair loss can be influenced by a multitude of factors, including genetics, hormonal changes, nutritional deficiencies, stress, and underlying medical conditions. In your case, if you have been experiencing hair loss while on these medications, it may be worthwhile to explore other potential causes. For instance, conditions such as androgenetic alopecia (male or female pattern baldness), telogen effluvium (temporary hair loss due to stress or illness), or seborrheic dermatitis can contribute to hair thinning and loss.
Additionally, lifestyle factors such as smoking, alcohol consumption, and irregular sleep patterns can exacerbate hair loss. Stress and poor sleep quality have been shown to impact hair health negatively, leading to increased shedding. Therefore, addressing these lifestyle factors may help improve your overall hair condition.
If you are concerned about your hair loss, it may be beneficial to consult with a dermatologist or a trichologist who specializes in hair and scalp disorders. They can conduct a thorough examination, possibly including blood tests to check for hormonal imbalances or nutritional deficiencies, and provide tailored advice or treatment options.
In summary, while Cozaar and Forflow are not known to cause hair loss, it is crucial to consider other factors that may be contributing to your situation. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, managing stress, and seeking professional advice can be effective steps in addressing hair loss concerns. If you have further questions or need more personalized guidance, do not hesitate to reach out to a healthcare professional.
