Oral Polio Vaccine (OPV)
Dear Doctor,
My child received the 4-in-1 vaccine and also took the oral polio vaccine once.
When we went to the health center for the Japanese encephalitis vaccine, it seems that they also administered 2 drops of the oral polio vaccine, but the health center did not stamp our vaccination booklet.
Therefore, we are unsure if the vaccine was actually administered.
I would like to ask Dr.
Hsieh if taking the oral polio vaccine three times would have any effects on my child's health or any other aspects.
Thank you for your response.

Dr. Xie Degui reply Pediatrics
There will be no impact, as antibodies are already present after vaccination, and there is no need for additional oral intake.

The question regarding the impact of multiple oral polio vaccinations on children's health is an important one, especially in the context of ensuring that children receive adequate immunization without unnecessary risks.
Oral polio vaccine (OPV) is a live attenuated vaccine that has been widely used to prevent poliomyelitis. The vaccine is administered orally, and it works by stimulating the immune system to produce antibodies against the poliovirus. It is generally considered safe and effective, and it has played a crucial role in reducing the incidence of polio worldwide.
In terms of the safety of receiving multiple doses of the oral polio vaccine, it is important to note that the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend that children receive multiple doses of the polio vaccine as part of their routine immunization schedule. The typical schedule includes several doses during infancy and early childhood, with additional booster doses as needed.
Receiving multiple doses of the OPV is not only safe but also beneficial. The vaccine is designed to enhance immunity, and additional doses can help ensure that the child is adequately protected against poliovirus. In fact, the more doses a child receives, the better their immune response is likely to be.
However, there are some considerations to keep in mind. While the OPV is generally safe, there is a very small risk of vaccine-derived poliovirus (VDPV) in rare cases, particularly in immunocompromised individuals. This occurs when the weakened virus in the vaccine mutates and can cause illness. For healthy children, the benefits of vaccination far outweigh the risks.
Regarding your specific situation, if your child has received the oral polio vaccine three times, it is unlikely to have any adverse effects on their health. In fact, it may provide additional protection against poliovirus. However, it is essential to ensure that all vaccinations are properly documented in the child's health record. This documentation is crucial for tracking immunization history and ensuring that the child receives the appropriate vaccines at the right intervals.
If there is uncertainty about whether your child received the vaccine during the visit to the health center, it may be beneficial to consult with your healthcare provider. They can review your child's immunization history and determine if any additional doses are necessary. They can also provide guidance on the importance of keeping accurate records of vaccinations.
In summary, multiple doses of the oral polio vaccine are generally safe and beneficial for children. They help to build a strong immune response and protect against poliovirus. If there are any concerns or questions about your child's vaccination status, it is always best to consult with a healthcare professional who can provide personalized advice based on your child's health history. Keeping an open line of communication with your healthcare provider will ensure that your child receives the best possible care and protection against preventable diseases.
