Urinary Urgency After Ejaculation in Men - Urology

Unable to resist?

Is this something that happens to all men? Because every time there is ejaculation, even after just reaching the point of ejaculation without completing it, I find that for 1-2 days, I have a harder time holding my urine.
As soon as I feel the urge to urinate, I need to go quickly.
Why does this happen? And after a few days, I can return to normal.
Thank you, doctor.

WEI, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2009/08/01

Hello, I think not everyone experiences this.
Generally, after an erection or ejaculation, there is a period of neural excitement that can lead to a constant feeling of urgency to urinate, with a sensation of bladder fullness, which typically subsides after a few hours.
It is rare to hear of this lasting for 1-2 days.
As for whether there is a problem, I personally believe it may be due to an individual's unique physiology, and as long as one can adapt to this situation, it should be manageable.
If it is bothersome, I personally recommend using a warm towel to apply heat to the genital area and lower abdomen after ejaculation, as this may help increase local blood circulation and potentially improve the situation.
If there are any unclear points, feel free to ask again, and we can discuss and research further.
Sincerely, Dr.
Hsu Wei-Kai, Director of Urology, Taitung Hospital, Department of Health, Executive Yuan.

Urinary urgency after ejaculation is a phenomenon that some men experience, and it can be attributed to several physiological and neurological factors. While not every man will experience this, it is not uncommon for those who do. The urgency to urinate shortly after ejaculation can be linked to the complex interplay between the reproductive and urinary systems, both of which share some anatomical structures and nerve pathways.

During ejaculation, the body undergoes a series of muscular contractions that are primarily controlled by the autonomic nervous system. This system regulates involuntary bodily functions, including those of the bladder and prostate. The prostate gland, which is located just below the bladder, plays a crucial role in both urinary and reproductive functions. When ejaculation occurs, the prostate contracts to expel semen, and this contraction can sometimes stimulate the bladder, leading to a feeling of urgency to urinate.

Additionally, the urethra, which is the tube that carries urine from the bladder out of the body, also serves as the passage for semen during ejaculation. The close proximity of these functions means that any activity involving the urethra can potentially influence urinary sensations. After ejaculation, the body may still be in a heightened state of arousal, which can lead to increased sensitivity in the bladder and a more pronounced urge to urinate.

Moreover, hormonal changes that occur during and after sexual activity can also affect bladder function. For instance, the release of certain hormones can lead to increased blood flow to the pelvic region, which might enhance the sensation of urgency. Additionally, the relaxation of the pelvic floor muscles during ejaculation can temporarily alter the dynamics of bladder control, leading to a feeling of urgency.

In your case, it seems that this urgency occurs for 1-2 days after ejaculation, which could be due to residual effects of the muscular contractions and hormonal changes that take place during sexual activity. It is also possible that the bladder may be more sensitive during this time, making it feel fuller or more urgent than usual.

It is important to note that while this phenomenon can be normal, if the urgency is accompanied by pain, discomfort, or any other unusual symptoms, it would be advisable to consult a healthcare professional. Conditions such as prostatitis, urinary tract infections, or other underlying issues could also contribute to urinary urgency and should be evaluated by a doctor.

In summary, urinary urgency after ejaculation can be a normal response due to the anatomical and physiological connections between the urinary and reproductive systems. If this symptom is bothersome or persistent, seeking medical advice can help rule out any underlying conditions and provide reassurance.
