Body odor

I would like to ask the following questions: 1.
I do not have underarm hair and previously did not have any odor, but now only my left armpit has an odor.
Could this be a change in my body chemistry that is causing the odor? 2.
Can I gradually eliminate the odor through exercise? 3.
Are there currently cosmetic procedures available to remove this issue, and if so, will it transfer to another area? Are there any potential side effects?

Xiao Zhu, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2009/10/06

Dr. Li Weiqiang reply Physical Fitness

Dear Xiao Zhu,
Exercise can enhance sweating function, but it cannot completely resolve your issue.
Thank you for your letter.
Regarding the surgical aspect, our surgical team has provided the following responses:
1.
Does a change in body constitution lead to odor production? --> It may be necessary to maintain dryness and cleanliness to reduce odor formation.
2.
Are there currently cosmetic surgeries available to remove it? Will it transfer to another area? --> No, it will not transfer.
Are there any potential complications? --> The rate of surgical complications is low, including risks such as infection, necrosis, hematoma, etc.
Please discuss further with the plastic surgeon before the surgery.
Wishing you good health!

Body odor, or bromhidrosis, can be a complex issue influenced by various factors, including genetics, diet, hygiene, and hormonal changes. Let's address your questions one by one.

1. Change in Body Odor: The emergence of body odor, particularly if it is localized to one armpit, can indeed be attributed to changes in your body chemistry. Factors such as hormonal fluctuations, diet, stress levels, and even changes in your skin microbiome can contribute to this. For instance, certain foods (like garlic, onions, and spices) can alter the scent of your sweat. Additionally, hormonal changes, such as those occurring during puberty, menstruation, or other life stages, can also affect sweat production and odor. If you previously had no odor and now experience it only on one side, it might be worth considering if there have been any recent changes in your lifestyle or health that could explain this.

2. Exercise and Body Odor: Regular exercise can help improve overall body odor in some cases. Physical activity increases blood circulation and can help regulate sweat glands. However, it’s important to note that exercise can also lead to increased sweating, which may temporarily exacerbate body odor if proper hygiene is not maintained. While exercise itself may not directly eliminate body odor, it can contribute to better overall health and potentially improve your body's ability to manage odor over time. Maintaining good hygiene practices, such as regular washing and using antiperspirants or deodorants, will also be crucial.

3. Surgical Options and Concerns: There are surgical options available for excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), such as sympathectomy, which involves cutting nerves that trigger sweating. However, this procedure is typically reserved for severe cases and comes with risks, including compensatory sweating (where the body compensates by sweating more in other areas), potential nerve damage, and other complications. It's essential to consult with a qualified healthcare provider or a specialist in dermatology or plastic surgery to discuss your specific situation, the potential for side effects, and whether surgery is the best option for you.

In summary, the appearance of body odor can be influenced by various factors, and while exercise may help improve overall health and potentially reduce odor, it is not a guaranteed solution. If the odor persists or worsens, or if you have concerns about surgical options, it is advisable to seek a consultation with a healthcare professional who can provide personalized advice and treatment options based on your specific circumstances.
