Cod liver oil

Hello Doctor: My child is 8 years old and in the second grade.
Both eyes have myopia of -1.25 diopters, and we are currently using a long-acting cycloplegic agent.
The prescription has increased from -0.75 diopters.
Can taking cod liver oil help prevent the progression of myopia, or are there other methods to control the worsening of myopia? Thank you for your guidance, and I appreciate your hard work.

Xiao Ling, 40~49 year old female. Ask Date: 2009/12/14

Dr. Ke Meilan reply Ophthalmology

Hello: The concentration of long-acting mydriatics should be increased, and if controlled properly, it can only be increased by 50 degrees per year.
It is important to take breaks during close-up activities, and as much as possible, do not wear glasses at home while studying or using the computer.
Cod liver oil is unlikely to be of much help.
Wishing you peace and good health.

Cod liver oil has been a popular supplement for its rich content of omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins A and D, and other beneficial nutrients. However, when it comes to preventing myopia progression in children, the evidence is not definitive. Myopia, or nearsightedness, is a common refractive error that typically begins in childhood and can progress as the child grows.
Research has shown that environmental factors, such as prolonged near work (like reading or using screens) and limited outdoor activity, can contribute to the progression of myopia. Therefore, while cod liver oil may offer some general health benefits, it is not specifically recognized as a treatment or preventive measure for myopia progression.
The omega-3 fatty acids found in cod liver oil, particularly EPA and DHA, are known for their anti-inflammatory properties and potential benefits for eye health. Some studies suggest that omega-3 fatty acids may play a role in maintaining overall eye health, but there is insufficient evidence to conclude that they can prevent or slow down the progression of myopia.
For children with myopia, the most effective strategies to manage and potentially slow the progression include:
1. Increased Outdoor Time: Studies have indicated that spending more time outdoors can help reduce the risk of developing myopia and may slow its progression. The natural light exposure and the opportunity to focus on distant objects are believed to be beneficial.

2. Regular Eye Exams: Frequent check-ups with an eye care professional can help monitor the progression of myopia and adjust prescriptions as necessary. Early intervention can be crucial.

3. Vision Therapy: Some children may benefit from vision therapy, which includes exercises designed to improve visual skills and processing.

4. Atropine Eye Drops: Low-dose atropine eye drops have been shown in some studies to slow the progression of myopia in children. This treatment should be discussed with an eye care professional.

5. Proper Lighting and Breaks: Ensuring that children have adequate lighting when reading or doing close work, and encouraging regular breaks (like the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds) can help reduce eye strain.

6. Diet and Nutrition: While cod liver oil may not directly prevent myopia, a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals is essential for overall eye health. Foods high in antioxidants, such as leafy greens, carrots, and fish, can support good vision.

In conclusion, while cod liver oil may provide general health benefits, it should not be relied upon as a primary method for preventing myopia progression in children. Instead, a combination of outdoor activities, regular eye examinations, and appropriate interventions should be prioritized. If you have concerns about your child's vision or myopia progression, it is best to consult with an eye care professional who can provide tailored advice and treatment options.
