Urethral stones

What foods should be avoided with urethral stones? Can potatoes be eaten with urethral stones? Why is there acidity after surgery? Why is there blood in the urine after surgery? Thank you! ^_^

Zhu Zai, 40~49 year old female. Ask Date: 2010/04/17

Dr. Xu Weikai reply Urology

Piglet: Hello, regarding urinary stones, avoid consuming overly salty foods.
Limit soup intake, reduce salt consumption, and minimize beverage intake.
Drink plenty of plain water, aiming for 3000cc daily, or maintain a daily urine output of 1500cc.
If you can adhere to these guidelines, you can eat a variety of foods as long as you don't overindulge.
Will there be blood in your urine after surgery? I'm not sure which type of surgery you underwent.
Did you have a catheter placed? Was a ureteral stent used? This response is provided by Dr.
Hsu Wei-Kai, Director of the Urology Department at Taitung Hospital, Ministry of Health and Welfare.

When it comes to dietary restrictions and post-surgery concerns for ureteral stones, there are several important factors to consider. Ureteral stones, also known as kidney stones, can vary in composition, and dietary recommendations often depend on the type of stone a patient has. The most common types of stones include calcium oxalate, uric acid, struvite, and cystine stones. Each type has specific dietary guidelines to help prevent recurrence.

1. Dietary Restrictions:
- Calcium Oxalate Stones: If you have calcium oxalate stones, it is advisable to limit foods high in oxalate. This includes spinach, rhubarb, beets, nuts, chocolate, tea, and certain berries. However, it is important to maintain adequate calcium intake through dairy products, as low calcium can actually increase oxalate absorption.

- Uric Acid Stones: For those with uric acid stones, reducing purine-rich foods is recommended. This includes organ meats, red meats, shellfish, and certain fish. Increasing fluid intake and consuming more fruits and vegetables can help.

- Struvite Stones: These are often associated with urinary tract infections. Preventative measures include managing infections and possibly avoiding certain foods that can contribute to alkaline urine.

- Cystine Stones: Individuals with cystine stones may need to limit sodium and animal protein intake and increase fluid intake to dilute urine.

2. Potatoes: Potatoes are generally considered safe to eat for most individuals, including those with ureteral stones. They are low in oxalate and can be a good source of carbohydrates. However, if you are on a specific diet for stone prevention, it is always best to consult with your healthcare provider or a dietitian for personalized advice.

3. Post-Surgery Symptoms:
- Pain and Discomfort: It is common to experience some discomfort or pain after surgery for ureteral stones. This can be due to inflammation or irritation in the urinary tract. Pain management is important, and your doctor may prescribe medications to help alleviate this discomfort.

- Blood in Urine: Hematuria, or blood in the urine, is a common occurrence after ureteral stone surgery. This can happen due to trauma to the urinary tract during the procedure. It is usually temporary and should resolve as healing occurs. However, if the bleeding persists or worsens, it is essential to contact your healthcare provider.

4. Hydration: One of the most critical aspects of managing and preventing ureteral stones is staying well-hydrated. Drinking plenty of fluids helps dilute urine and can prevent the formation of new stones. Aim for at least 2-3 liters of water daily, unless otherwise directed by your physician.

5. Follow-Up Care: Regular follow-up appointments with your healthcare provider are essential after surgery. They can monitor your recovery, assess for any complications, and provide guidance on dietary changes and lifestyle modifications to prevent future stone formation.

In conclusion, managing ureteral stones involves a combination of dietary modifications, hydration, and careful monitoring of post-surgical symptoms. If you have specific dietary concerns or experience unusual symptoms after surgery, it is crucial to consult with your healthcare provider for tailored advice and management strategies.
