Nasal issues
Hello, doctor.
In the past, I had symptoms of allergic rhinitis (I would have a runny nose when the weather was too cold, but not during hot days).
However, since the symptoms were not severe, I did not seek treatment.
This year, I have started experiencing new symptoms.
Upon waking up in the morning, my nose feels very dry and uncomfortable (I often sneeze), and I have a runny nose regardless of the weather.
I frequently experience nasal congestion, and the nasal discharge is mostly clear, sometimes with a small amount of yellowish, thick mucus (occasionally in clumps and with streaks of blood).
I also have sudden coughing episodes (the duration varies).
These are my symptoms, and I would like to seek your advice.
Thank you.

Hello: In response to your question, it seems that the factors related to allergic rhinitis may still be present.
Be cautious not to develop sinusitis, and if symptoms persist, you should seek treatment from an otolaryngologist as soon as possible.

More Info
Understanding nasal issues, particularly allergic rhinitis, can be quite complex, as they often involve a variety of symptoms and potential underlying causes. Based on your description, it seems you are experiencing a range of symptoms that are common in allergic rhinitis, including nasal congestion, runny nose, sneezing, and occasional coughing. Let's break down your symptoms and explore potential solutions.
Symptoms of Allergic Rhinitis
1. Nasal Congestion: This is a common symptom where the nasal passages become swollen and inflamed, making it difficult to breathe through the nose. This can be particularly bothersome at night, affecting sleep quality.
2. Runny Nose: The clear, watery discharge you describe is typical of allergic rhinitis. The presence of yellowish, thick mucus can indicate a secondary infection or sinus involvement.
3. Sneezing: Frequent sneezing is a hallmark of allergic reactions, often triggered by allergens such as pollen, dust mites, or pet dander.
4. Dryness and Discomfort: Waking up with a dry nose can be uncomfortable and may be exacerbated by environmental factors such as dry air, especially during winter months or in air-conditioned spaces.
5. Coughing: This can occur due to post-nasal drip, where mucus drips down the back of the throat, leading to irritation and coughing.
Potential Causes
Your symptoms suggest that you may be dealing with allergic rhinitis, which can be triggered by various allergens. Additionally, the presence of blood in your nasal discharge could indicate irritation or inflammation in the nasal passages, possibly due to frequent nose blowing or dry air.
Treatment Options
1. Avoidance of Triggers: Identifying and avoiding allergens is crucial. This may involve using air purifiers, keeping windows closed during high pollen seasons, and regularly cleaning your living space to reduce dust and pet dander.
2. Medications:
- Antihistamines: These can help alleviate sneezing, itching, and runny nose. Over-the-counter options include cetirizine (Zyrtec) and loratadine (Claritin).
- Nasal Corticosteroids: These are effective for reducing inflammation in the nasal passages. Fluticasone (Flonase) and mometasone (Nasonex) are commonly prescribed.
- Decongestants: Short-term use of decongestant nasal sprays (like oxymetazoline) can relieve nasal congestion, but they should not be used for more than three days to avoid rebound congestion.
3. Saline Nasal Irrigation: Using a saline solution to rinse your nasal passages can help remove allergens and mucus, providing relief from congestion and dryness.
4. Immunotherapy: If your symptoms are severe and persistent, you may consider allergy shots or sublingual tablets, which can help desensitize your immune system to specific allergens over time.
5. Consultation with an ENT Specialist: Given the complexity of your symptoms, it may be beneficial to consult with an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist. They can perform a thorough examination, possibly including allergy testing, to determine the specific triggers and recommend a tailored treatment plan.
Conclusion
In summary, your symptoms align with allergic rhinitis, and there are several effective treatment options available. It’s essential to identify your specific triggers and consider a combination of avoidance strategies and medications to manage your symptoms effectively. If your symptoms persist or worsen, seeking professional medical advice is crucial for a comprehensive evaluation and management plan. Remember, managing allergic rhinitis is often a multi-faceted approach that may require adjustments over time.
