Penile Swelling: When to Seek Emergency Care - Urology

Penile swelling

A few days ago, I noticed slight swelling at the base of my penis.
Since the swelling was not significant, I initially didn't pay much attention to it.
However, today the swelling has suddenly worsened, and it is primarily the upper half that is severely swollen.
Could this indicate damage to the tunica albuginea? Today is Saturday, and there are very few hospitals open for consultations.
I won't be able to see a doctor until later tonight, which makes me quite anxious.
Will the emergency department evaluate these symptoms?

A Lu, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2010/07/31

Hello: In response to your question, if the swelling and discomfort persist, you may need to visit the outpatient clinic (our hospital has evening and Saturday clinics).
Damage to the hymen can cause bruising, which is typically felt as a tearing sensation after intercourse or masturbation.

When it comes to penile swelling, it's essential to understand the potential causes and when to seek emergency care. Swelling in the penile area can arise from various factors, including infections, trauma, allergic reactions, or underlying medical conditions. Given that you have noticed a significant increase in swelling over the past few days, it is crucial to take this symptom seriously.

Firstly, the swelling you are experiencing could be due to several reasons. If the swelling is localized to the upper part of the penis, it may indicate an issue such as Peyronie's disease, which involves the development of fibrous scar tissue inside the penis, leading to curvature and swelling. Alternatively, it could be a sign of an infection, such as balanitis (inflammation of the glans) or a sexually transmitted infection (STI), which can cause swelling and discomfort.

In your case, since the swelling has progressed and is now more pronounced, it is advisable to seek medical attention. While you mentioned that it is the weekend and access to medical care may be limited, many emergency departments are equipped to handle urological issues. It is better to err on the side of caution, especially if you are experiencing any additional symptoms such as pain, redness, fever, or discharge. These could indicate a more serious condition that requires prompt treatment.

If you suspect that the swelling might be due to trauma or injury to the area, it is even more critical to seek care. Trauma can lead to complications such as penile fracture, which is a medical emergency. Symptoms of a penile fracture typically include a popping sound at the time of injury, immediate swelling, bruising, and pain. If you have experienced any trauma, do not hesitate to go to the emergency room.

In terms of whether the emergency department will address your concerns, they are trained to handle a wide range of urological issues, including penile swelling. They can perform a physical examination, possibly conduct imaging studies if necessary, and provide appropriate treatment based on their findings. Treatment may involve medications, drainage of any abscesses, or referral to a urologist for further evaluation.

In summary, given the progression of your symptoms, it is advisable to seek emergency care. Do not wait for the swelling to worsen or for additional symptoms to develop. Your health and well-being are paramount, and addressing potential issues early can prevent complications down the line. Remember, it is always better to be safe and get checked out, especially when it comes to symptoms that could indicate a serious condition.
