Post-operative issues following endoscopic sinus surgery?
Hello, Dr.
Yeh.
A few days ago, I had an MRI of my brain at the hospital, and the doctor said that my nasal cavity was filled with pus due to sinusitis.
Therefore, I underwent endoscopic surgery on December 3rd to clean out the pus from my nasal cavity.
It has now been over ten days since the surgery, and my nasal passages are clear.
I have been regularly rinsing my nose and taking the antibiotics and medications prescribed by the doctor.
However, one issue that seems to persist is the pain in my forehead.
I found information online stating that sinusitis can cause swelling and pain in the forehead, as well as fatigue.
Given that I have had surgery and it has been over ten days, is it normal to still experience this mild headache? Thank you for your response.

Dear Sir/Madam: It is possible.
Further follow-up with endoscopic examination is necessary.

Hello! Thank you for reaching out with your concerns regarding your recovery after sinus surgery. It’s understandable to have questions about your symptoms, especially after undergoing a procedure aimed at alleviating your sinus issues.
First, it’s important to recognize that post-operative recovery can vary significantly from person to person. After sinus surgery, especially if it involved cleaning out infected or inflamed tissue, it is not uncommon to experience some lingering discomfort, including forehead pain. This can be attributed to several factors:
1. Post-Operative Inflammation: After surgery, the tissues in and around your sinuses may still be inflamed. This inflammation can lead to pressure and pain in the forehead area, as well as a feeling of fullness or heaviness. It can take time for the inflammation to subside, even after the surgery has been performed.
2. Nasal Congestion: Although you mentioned that your nasal passages are now clear, it’s possible that residual swelling or congestion could still be affecting your sinuses. This can lead to discomfort and a sensation of pressure in the forehead.
3. Sinus Drainage: Following surgery, your sinuses may still be in the process of draining any remaining mucus or fluid. This drainage can sometimes cause discomfort or a dull ache in the forehead area.
4. Healing Process: The healing process itself can be uncomfortable. As the tissues heal, you may experience various sensations, including pain, tenderness, or even headaches. This is a normal part of recovery.
5. Medication Effects: If you are taking pain medications or antibiotics, these can sometimes have side effects that include headaches or changes in how you feel overall.
In general, mild to moderate forehead pain after sinus surgery can be considered normal, especially within the first few weeks post-operation. However, if the pain persists, worsens, or is accompanied by other concerning symptoms such as fever, increased swelling, or changes in vision, it is crucial to follow up with your healthcare provider. They may want to assess for any potential complications, such as infection or issues with healing.
Here are some recommendations to help manage your symptoms:
- Pain Management: Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen, can help alleviate discomfort. However, always consult your doctor before taking any new medications.
- Hydration: Staying well-hydrated can help thin mucus and promote drainage, which may alleviate some pressure.
- Nasal Irrigation: Continue with saline nasal rinses as recommended by your doctor. This can help keep your nasal passages clear and reduce inflammation.
- Rest: Ensure you are getting adequate rest to support your body’s healing process.
- Follow-Up: Keep your follow-up appointments with your ENT specialist. They can provide further evaluation and adjust your treatment plan if necessary.
In summary, while some forehead pain can be a normal part of recovery after sinus surgery, it’s essential to monitor your symptoms and communicate with your healthcare provider if you have any concerns. They can provide the best guidance tailored to your specific situation. Wishing you a smooth recovery!
