Prevention of Acute Hepatitis
I am a resident of the outlying island of Matsu.
Recently, I visited your clinic due to acute hepatitis, and after being diagnosed by Dr.
Chen, I was given 15 packets of herbal medicine to brew and consume.
However, after each dose, I feel very heavy-headed and sleepy.
I am unsure if the herbal ingredients have such effects.
Please advise! Additionally, please inform me how to prevent a recurrence of acute hepatitis.
Thank you!

Dr. Yang Guojun reply Gastroenterology and Hepatology
Acute hepatitis is generally classified into three main categories: viral, drug-induced, or autoimmune.
Each type has different management approaches.
However, I do not have experience with herbal remedies, so I cannot explain why you are experiencing drowsiness.

More Info
Preventing acute hepatitis, especially for residents in remote areas like Matsu, requires a multifaceted approach that includes understanding the disease, recognizing symptoms, and being cautious with treatments, including herbal remedies. Acute hepatitis can be caused by viral infections, drug reactions, or autoimmune conditions, and each type has different implications for treatment and prevention.
Firstly, regarding your experience with herbal remedies, it is essential to recognize that while some herbs may have beneficial effects, they can also lead to side effects, including drowsiness or a feeling of heaviness. This could be due to the specific herbs used or their interaction with your body, especially if your liver is already compromised. It is crucial to consult with a healthcare professional about the specific herbs you are consuming, as some may not be suitable for individuals with liver conditions.
In terms of preventing acute hepatitis, here are several strategies:
1. Vaccination: For hepatitis A and B, vaccines are available and highly effective. If you have not been vaccinated against hepatitis A or B, it is advisable to discuss this with your healthcare provider.
2. Hygiene Practices: Good hygiene is vital in preventing hepatitis A, which is often transmitted through contaminated food and water. Ensure that you wash your hands thoroughly, especially before meals and after using the restroom.
3. Safe Practices: Avoid sharing personal items that may come into contact with blood, such as razors or toothbrushes. If you are engaging in activities that could expose you to blood (like tattoos or piercings), ensure that sterile equipment is used.
4. Diet and Lifestyle: Maintaining a healthy diet and lifestyle can support liver health. Avoid excessive alcohol consumption, which can exacerbate liver damage. Regular exercise and a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can help maintain overall health.
5. Regular Check-ups: If you have a history of liver disease or are at risk for hepatitis, regular medical check-ups are essential. Blood tests can help monitor liver function and detect any abnormalities early.
6. Avoiding Harmful Substances: Be cautious with medications and herbal supplements. Some substances can be hepatotoxic, meaning they can cause liver damage. Always discuss any new medications or supplements with your healthcare provider, especially if you have a history of liver issues.
7. Education: Stay informed about the risks of hepatitis and the importance of prevention. Understanding the symptoms of hepatitis can lead to earlier diagnosis and treatment, which is crucial for better outcomes.
In conclusion, while herbal remedies may provide some benefits, they should be approached with caution, especially in the context of liver health. It is essential to consult with healthcare professionals regarding any treatments you are considering. Preventing acute hepatitis involves a combination of vaccination, hygiene, safe practices, and regular health monitoring. By taking these steps, you can significantly reduce your risk of developing acute hepatitis and support your overall liver health.
