Nipple pain..?

Today, while taking a shower, I felt pain when touching my nipple.
Later, I pressed on it and expelled a lot of yellowish-white liquid, but it wasn't very watery.
I kept pressing until it felt like a soft comedone, and towards the end, it turned into a clear liquid.
What could this be? Which specialty should I consult for related examinations? I'm very worried.

Lin Dou Dou, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2012/02/14

Dr. Zhou Jiazhen reply Breast and Thyroid

Hello, based on your description, 1.
it could possibly be a skin cyst of the nipple, caused by blockage of the skin glands.
2.
It may also be an issue related to the mammary ducts.
I recommend visiting a breast surgery clinic for further examination by a specialist.
Wishing you safety and health.
Sincerely, Dr.
Chou Chia-Cheng, Chief of Surgery, Taoyuan Hospital, Department of Health.

Nipple pain can be a concerning symptom, especially when accompanied by discharge. It's important to understand the potential causes of nipple pain and when to seek medical help.
Nipple pain can arise from various factors, including hormonal changes, infections, skin conditions, or even underlying medical issues. In your case, the yellowish-white discharge you described could indicate several possibilities. One common cause is a condition known as mammary duct ectasia, where a milk duct beneath the nipple dilates, fills with fluid, and may become blocked. This can lead to pain and discharge, often resembling pus or thick fluid. Another possibility is an infection, such as mastitis, which is more common in breastfeeding women but can occur in others as well.
Additionally, if the discharge is accompanied by other symptoms such as redness, swelling, or a lump in the breast, it could indicate a more serious condition, such as a breast abscess or even breast cancer, although the latter is less common in younger individuals.
Given your symptoms, it is advisable to seek medical attention. You should consider visiting a healthcare provider who specializes in breast health, such as a general practitioner, gynecologist, or a breast specialist. They can perform a thorough examination, which may include a physical exam, imaging tests like a mammogram or ultrasound, and possibly laboratory tests to analyze the discharge.
In the meantime, avoid squeezing or manipulating the nipple area, as this can exacerbate any underlying condition or lead to further irritation. It’s also essential to monitor any changes in your symptoms, such as the appearance of new lumps, changes in the discharge, or increased pain, and report these to your healthcare provider.

In summary, nipple pain and discharge can stem from various causes, and it’s crucial to consult a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Early intervention can often lead to better outcomes, so don’t hesitate to seek help. Your health and peace of mind are important, and addressing these symptoms promptly is the best course of action.
