About herniated discs?
Hello doctor, I would like to ask about herniated discs.
The electromyography (EMG) test showed no nerve damage, but I experience numbness in my legs after walking for ten minutes, although there is no pain.
I am currently undergoing rehabilitation with back stretching exercises.
Are there any hospitals where I can receive treatment without surgery? Thank you for your response!

Dr. Ding Xianwei reply Neurosurgery
Due to the lack of your complete information, I cannot provide specific advice! However, a herniated disc is not a cancerous condition, so there is no immediate life-threatening risk.
Surgery is considered a quality of life procedure.
Therefore, as long as you can tolerate your current symptoms, surgery may not be necessary.
If you are not willing to undergo surgery, then medication and rehabilitation are options.
However, if you find your quality of life intolerable, surgery could be a viable choice!

When it comes to treating herniated discs, especially when surgery is not an immediate option, there are several non-surgical treatment options available. It's great to hear that your electromyography (EMG) results indicate that there is no nerve damage, as this can often lead to a more favorable prognosis with conservative treatments. Here are some common non-surgical approaches to managing herniated discs:
1. Physical Therapy: Engaging in a structured physical therapy program can be highly beneficial. Physical therapists can design a personalized exercise regimen that focuses on strengthening the muscles surrounding the spine, improving flexibility, and enhancing overall posture. This can help alleviate pressure on the affected disc and reduce symptoms.
2. Chiropractic Care: Chiropractic adjustments may help relieve pain and improve spinal function. Chiropractors use manual manipulation techniques to realign the spine, which can alleviate pressure on the nerves and reduce discomfort.
3. Medications: Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), can help manage pain and inflammation. In some cases, your doctor may prescribe stronger medications or muscle relaxants if necessary.
4. Epidural Steroid Injections: For more severe pain, epidural steroid injections can provide temporary relief. These injections deliver corticosteroids directly into the epidural space around the spinal nerves, reducing inflammation and pain.
5. Alternative Therapies: Some patients find relief through acupuncture, massage therapy, or yoga. These therapies can help reduce muscle tension and improve overall well-being.
6. Lifestyle Modifications: Making changes to your daily routine can also help manage symptoms. This includes maintaining a healthy weight, practicing good posture, and avoiding activities that exacerbate your pain.
7. Hydration and Nutrition: Staying well-hydrated and maintaining a balanced diet rich in anti-inflammatory foods can support overall spinal health.
As for finding a hospital or clinic that offers these non-surgical treatments, many rehabilitation centers, physical therapy clinics, and chiropractic offices provide these services. It’s essential to consult with your primary care physician or a specialist in spinal health to get recommendations tailored to your specific needs. They can refer you to reputable facilities that focus on conservative management of herniated discs.
Additionally, it’s crucial to communicate openly with your healthcare providers about your symptoms and any concerns you may have. They can help monitor your progress and adjust your treatment plan as necessary. If you find that your symptoms persist or worsen despite conservative treatment, further evaluation may be warranted to explore other options.
In summary, while surgery is sometimes necessary for herniated discs, many patients find relief through non-surgical methods. With the right approach and a commitment to your treatment plan, you can manage your symptoms effectively and improve your quality of life. Always consult with your healthcare provider before starting any new treatment to ensure it aligns with your specific health needs.
