Does drinking lemon water cause bleeding gums and gastrointestinal discomfort?

I rarely drank lemon water before, but two weeks ago I heard that lemon water is very beneficial for the body, so I started drinking it every day (about half a lemon sliced and placed in approximately 1000cc of water).
However, in the past couple of days, I've been feeling some gastrointestinal discomfort (my stomach is churning, I have gas, and I have slightly loose stools).
Additionally, my teeth (which have untreated cavities) seem to be bleeding, and occasionally I notice a metallic taste in my mouth; I discovered some blood when I flossed.
Could the issues mentioned above be caused by drinking lemon water? If so, what is the proper way to drink lemon water? I would appreciate your guidance, doctor.

More Info

Drinking lemon water has gained popularity due to its purported health benefits, including improved digestion and vitamin C intake. However, it can also lead to some adverse effects, particularly for individuals with certain pre-existing conditions or sensitivities. In your case, the symptoms you're experiencing—gum bleeding and stomach discomfort—could indeed be related to your recent increase in lemon water consumption.

Gum Bleeding
Lemon juice is highly acidic, and while it can be beneficial for oral health in moderation, excessive consumption can lead to enamel erosion. If you have untreated cavities, the acid can exacerbate the situation, leading to increased sensitivity and potential bleeding of the gums. The presence of blood in your mouth, especially when you notice it while flossing or brushing, may indicate that the acidity is irritating your gums or that the cavities are worsening.

To mitigate this, consider the following:
1. Dilution: Instead of drinking concentrated lemon water, try diluting it further with more water. This can help reduce the acidity and lessen its impact on your teeth and gums.

2. Rinse After Drinking: After consuming lemon water, rinse your mouth with plain water to help neutralize the acidity and wash away any residual lemon juice.

3. Oral Hygiene: Maintain good oral hygiene practices. Brush your teeth gently and consider using a toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth. If bleeding persists, consult a dentist for a thorough examination.

Stomach Discomfort
As for the gastrointestinal symptoms, lemon water can stimulate the digestive system, which might lead to increased gas, bloating, or even diarrhea in some individuals, especially if consumed in large quantities. The acidity can also irritate the stomach lining, particularly if you have a sensitive stomach or conditions like gastritis or acid reflux.

Here are some recommendations to alleviate your stomach discomfort:
1. Moderation: Reduce the amount of lemon water you consume daily. Instead of drinking it every day, consider limiting it to a few times a week.

2. Timing: Pay attention to when you drink lemon water. Consuming it on an empty stomach may exacerbate discomfort. Try drinking it with meals instead.

3. Monitor Your Diet: Keep track of other foods you consume alongside lemon water. Certain foods may interact negatively with the acidity, leading to discomfort.

4. Consult a Healthcare Provider: If your symptoms persist or worsen, it’s essential to consult a healthcare professional. They can help determine if there’s an underlying condition that needs to be addressed.

Conclusion
In summary, while lemon water can offer health benefits, it’s crucial to consume it mindfully, especially if you have dental issues or gastrointestinal sensitivities. Adjusting how you prepare and consume lemon water can help mitigate the adverse effects you’re experiencing. If symptoms persist, seeking advice from a healthcare provider is the best course of action to ensure your overall health and well-being.
