Using a condom causes erectile dysfunction, but without one, everything is completely normal?
Dear Dr.
Hsu,
Hello, I have been living abroad for many years, and it has been inconvenient for me to seek medical help.
I was thrilled to learn about this forum.
I have a long-standing issue regarding my sexual life that I would like to consult about: after achieving an erection, whenever I put on a condom and thrust about 50 times, I gradually lose my erection.
However, if I do not wear a condom, I can fully regain my erection, which causes difficulties in my sexual life.
A doctor previously prescribed DIAPINE and EUZIP 50MG for me, but they did not have much effect.
Should I take Viagra? Is it safe for me to take Viagra? What would be the starting dosage? Or are there other alternatives? Currently, I exercise regularly (three times a week, 80 minutes each time), but I am on medication for high blood pressure and heart disease (Tenormin, Isomol, Plavix).
Thank you.

Jack: Hello, it may be because wearing a condom isolates the glans, and if the stimulation is too minimal, it becomes difficult to achieve an erection.
In other words, greater stimulation or a change in technique may be needed.
Additionally, if this occurs frequently, it can lead to psychological barriers, where the sight of a condom makes one feel unable to complete sexual intercourse.
Note: Some individuals are more prone to premature ejaculation, and using a condom can help facilitate a more satisfactory sexual experience.
That’s my opinion.

Wearing a condom can indeed affect your erection, and this is a common concern among many men. There are several factors that could contribute to the issue you're experiencing, and understanding these can help you find a solution.
Firstly, the physical sensation of wearing a condom can be different from the sensation of skin-on-skin contact. Some men report that condoms reduce sensitivity, which can lead to difficulties in maintaining an erection. This is particularly true if the condom is too thick or if it does not fit properly. If you find that the condoms you are using are too tight or uncomfortable, consider trying different brands or types, such as ultra-thin condoms, which may enhance sensitivity.
Secondly, psychological factors can play a significant role in sexual performance. Anxiety about using a condom, fear of losing an erection, or concerns about performance can create a cycle of stress that makes it harder to maintain an erection. It's important to address any anxiety you may have regarding condom use. Open communication with your partner about your concerns can also help alleviate some of this pressure.
Regarding your medical history, you mentioned that you are taking medications for high blood pressure and heart disease. Some medications can have side effects that impact sexual function, including erectile dysfunction. For instance, beta-blockers, which are commonly prescribed for high blood pressure, can sometimes lead to difficulties in achieving or maintaining an erection. It’s essential to discuss your concerns with your healthcare provider, as they may be able to adjust your medication or suggest alternatives that have fewer sexual side effects.
You also mentioned that you have previously been prescribed DIAPINE and EUZIP, which are medications that can help with blood pressure but may not directly address erectile dysfunction. If you are considering taking Viagra (sildenafil), it is crucial to consult your doctor first, especially given your existing health conditions and medications. Viagra can be effective for many men, but it is not suitable for everyone, particularly those with certain heart conditions or those taking nitrates.
In addition to medication, there are other strategies you can explore. For instance, pelvic floor exercises, commonly known as Kegel exercises, can strengthen the muscles involved in erection and ejaculation, potentially improving your sexual performance. Additionally, ensuring that you are adequately aroused before attempting to put on a condom can help maintain your erection.
Lastly, if you continue to experience difficulties, consider seeking the help of a sexual health specialist or a urologist. They can provide tailored advice and treatment options based on your specific situation.
In summary, the issue of maintaining an erection while wearing a condom can stem from a combination of physical, psychological, and medical factors. Exploring different types of condoms, addressing any anxiety, consulting with your healthcare provider about your medications, and considering pelvic floor exercises can all contribute to improving your sexual experience. Always prioritize open communication with your partner and seek professional guidance when needed.
