Continuing to ask, does wearing a condom cause erectile dysfunction?
Dr.
Hsu: Hello, I have been living abroad for many years, and it is quite inconvenient for me to seek medical help.
I was thrilled to learn about this forum.
I have a long-standing issue regarding my sexual life that I would like to consult you about: after achieving an erection, as soon as I put on a condom and thrust about 50 times, I gradually lose my erection.
However, if I do not wear a condom, I can fully regain my erection, which causes difficulties in my sexual life.
A doctor once prescribed me DIAPINE and EUZIP 50MG, but they did not have much effect.
Should I take Viagra? Is it safe for me to take Viagra? What would be the starting dose? Or are there other solutions? Currently, I exercise regularly (three times a week, 80 minutes each time), but I am on medication for hypertension and heart disease (Tenormin, Isomol, Plavix).
Thank you.
Jack: Hello, it is possible that wearing a condom causes the glans to be insulated, and if the stimulation is too minimal, it becomes difficult to maintain an erection.
In other words, you may need greater stimulation or to change your technique.
Additionally, if this occurs frequently, over time, it may lead to psychological barriers, where just seeing a condom makes you feel unable to complete the sexual act.
Note: Some individuals who are prone to premature ejaculation may find that using a condom allows for a more satisfactory sexual experience.
That is my opinion.
Thank you, Dr.
Hsu, for your response.
I would like to ask further: I recall that several years ago, I first noticed that I would lose my erection when wearing a condom during an unexpected encounter, so I feel that the likelihood of psychological factors is low.
If it is not a psychological issue, are there medications that can address this phenomenon? Would using thinner or special condoms be helpful? Is it possible that long-term use of these hypertension medications is a contributing factor? Thank you.

Jack: It's difficult to determine whether your erectile dysfunction is caused by the condom.
However, some individuals find that switching to thinner condoms allows for greater stimulation, which can naturally resolve erectile dysfunction.
Blood pressure medications may also have an impact.
That said, it's completely normal to experience erectile function without a condom in your case.
Therefore, I still believe it is related to the condom.
If there are any unclear points, feel free to ask again, and we can discuss and research further.

Wearing a condom can indeed lead to erection issues for some individuals, and your experience is not uncommon. There are several factors that could contribute to this phenomenon, and understanding them can help you find a solution.
1. Physical Sensation: When a condom is worn, it can reduce the physical sensations experienced during intercourse. This reduction in sensation may lead to difficulties in maintaining an erection, especially if the condom is thicker or if it does not fit properly. Some individuals find that using ultra-thin condoms can enhance sensitivity and may help maintain an erection.
2. Psychological Factors: Even if you believe that your initial experience with condoms was not influenced by psychological factors, it is important to consider that repeated experiences of difficulty can create anxiety around the act of using a condom. This anxiety can lead to a cycle where the mere thought of using a condom can trigger erection issues. This is sometimes referred to as "performance anxiety."
3. Medication Side Effects: You mentioned that you are on medications for high blood pressure and heart conditions, such as Tenormin (atenolol), Isomol, and Plavix. Some of these medications can have side effects that impact sexual function, including erectile dysfunction. It is crucial to discuss these side effects with your healthcare provider, as they may be able to adjust your medications or suggest alternatives that have a lesser impact on your sexual health.
4. Physical Health: Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, as you are doing with regular exercise, is beneficial for sexual health. However, if you have underlying health conditions, they can still affect your erectile function. It is essential to manage these conditions effectively with the help of your healthcare provider.
5. Use of Erectile Dysfunction Medications: Medications like Viagra (sildenafil) can be effective in treating erectile dysfunction. However, given your current medications and health conditions, it is vital to consult with your doctor before starting any new medication. They can provide guidance on whether it is safe for you to use such medications and what the appropriate starting dose would be.
6. Alternative Solutions: In addition to trying thinner condoms, you might consider experimenting with different types of condoms, such as those designed for increased sensitivity or those with added lubrication. Sometimes, using a water-based or silicone-based lubricant can enhance sensation and comfort, potentially helping to maintain an erection.
7. Communication with Partner: Open communication with your partner about your experiences and concerns can also alleviate some of the pressure you may feel during sexual encounters. Discussing preferences and comfort levels can lead to a more relaxed atmosphere, which may help mitigate anxiety.
In summary, the issues you are experiencing with maintaining an erection while wearing a condom can stem from a combination of physical, psychological, and medication-related factors. It is advisable to consult with a healthcare provider who can assess your situation comprehensively and provide tailored recommendations. They may suggest trying different types of condoms, adjusting your medications, or considering erectile dysfunction treatments, all while ensuring your overall health is prioritized.
