From the left sternum to the clavicle?
My left sternum is protruding, and it feels strange all the way up to my collarbone.
It feels tight, and when my clothes rub against it, it feels like something is pressing on it, which is a bit uncomfortable.
When I'm not wearing clothes, I don't feel anything unusual, but the area around my sternum feels itchy.

More Info
Discomfort between the sternum and collarbone can be attributed to a variety of causes, ranging from musculoskeletal issues to gastrointestinal problems. Understanding the underlying reasons for your discomfort is crucial for determining the appropriate solutions.
Possible Causes
1. Musculoskeletal Issues:
- Costochondritis: This is an inflammation of the cartilage that connects a rib to the sternum. It can cause sharp pain and tenderness in the chest area, particularly when moving or pressing on the area.
- Muscle Strain: Overexertion or poor posture can lead to muscle strain in the chest, resulting in discomfort or tightness, especially when wearing tight clothing.
- Sternoclavicular Joint Dysfunction: This joint connects the sternum to the collarbone. Dysfunction or inflammation in this area can lead to pain and discomfort.
2. Gastrointestinal Issues:
- Acid Reflux or GERD: Gastroesophageal reflux disease can cause a burning sensation in the chest, which may be mistaken for pain originating from the heart or lungs. This discomfort can sometimes radiate to the area between the sternum and collarbone.
- Esophageal Spasms: These can cause sudden, intense chest pain that may mimic heart-related issues.
3. Nerve-Related Issues:
- Intercostal Neuralgia: This condition involves irritation of the nerves running between the ribs, leading to sharp pain or discomfort in the chest area.
- Thoracic Outlet Syndrome: This occurs when blood vessels or nerves in the space between your collarbone and your first rib become compressed, leading to pain and discomfort.
4. Psychological Factors:
- Anxiety and stress can manifest as physical symptoms, including tightness or discomfort in the chest area. This is often accompanied by a feeling of pressure or a sensation of being "squeezed."
Solutions and Recommendations
1. Consult a Healthcare Professional: It’s essential to consult a doctor for a thorough evaluation. They may perform a physical examination and recommend imaging tests (like X-rays or MRIs) to determine the exact cause of your discomfort.
2. Pain Management: Over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help alleviate discomfort. However, consult with a healthcare provider before starting any medication.
3. Physical Therapy: If the discomfort is musculoskeletal, physical therapy may be beneficial. A physical therapist can provide exercises to strengthen the chest muscles and improve posture.
4. Lifestyle Modifications:
- Posture Correction: Maintaining good posture can alleviate pressure on the chest area. Ergonomic adjustments at your workstation may also help.
- Clothing Choices: Wearing loose-fitting clothing can reduce friction and discomfort in the chest area.
5. Dietary Changes: If gastrointestinal issues are suspected, consider dietary modifications to reduce acid reflux symptoms. This may include avoiding spicy foods, caffeine, and large meals before bedtime.
6. Stress Management: If anxiety is contributing to your symptoms, techniques such as mindfulness, meditation, or counseling may be beneficial.
7. Avoiding Triggers: If certain activities or clothing exacerbate your symptoms, try to identify and avoid these triggers.
Conclusion
Discomfort between the sternum and collarbone can arise from various causes, including musculoskeletal issues, gastrointestinal problems, nerve-related issues, and psychological factors. A comprehensive evaluation by a healthcare professional is crucial to determine the underlying cause and appropriate treatment. By addressing the discomfort through lifestyle changes, pain management, and professional guidance, you can find relief and improve your quality of life.
