Pain upon palpation in the right upper quadrant?
Hello doctor, there is pain when pressing about two fingerbreadths to the right of my navel, and then another two fingerbreadths to the right.
I am 20 years old and do not have a habit of drinking alcohol or smoking.
However, I have been experiencing long-term sleep deprivation and staying up late.
If I do not press on that area, I sometimes feel a slight discomfort, but I have never experienced severe pain.
The pain when pressing on that area has lasted for over a week.
I have checked online and do not have symptoms like fever or nausea.

More Info
Right upper abdomen pain can be concerning, especially for young adults like yourself. Given your age and the absence of significant risk factors such as alcohol consumption or smoking, it’s essential to consider various potential causes for your discomfort.
Possible Causes of Right Upper Abdomen Pain
1. Musculoskeletal Issues: Since you mentioned that the pain is exacerbated by pressure, it could be related to muscle strain or tension in the abdominal wall. Poor posture, especially if you spend long hours sitting or sleeping in awkward positions, can lead to muscle tightness and discomfort.
2. Gallbladder Problems: Conditions such as gallstones or cholecystitis (inflammation of the gallbladder) can cause pain in the right upper quadrant. However, these typically present with additional symptoms like nausea, vomiting, or pain after eating fatty meals. Since you do not have these symptoms, this may be less likely.
3. Liver Issues: Although less common in young adults without risk factors, liver conditions can cause discomfort in the right upper abdomen. Conditions like hepatitis or fatty liver disease could be considered, especially if there are changes in appetite, fatigue, or jaundice.
4. Gastrointestinal Issues: Conditions such as gastritis, peptic ulcers, or even issues related to the intestines (like irritable bowel syndrome) can manifest as abdominal pain. However, these typically present with other gastrointestinal symptoms.
5. Referred Pain: Sometimes, pain in the right upper abdomen can be referred from other areas, such as the right shoulder or neck, particularly if there is irritation of the diaphragm or other structures.
Recommendations
1. Medical Evaluation: Given that the pain has persisted for over a week, it would be prudent to consult a healthcare provider for a thorough evaluation. They may perform a physical examination and consider imaging studies (like an ultrasound or CT scan) to rule out any serious conditions.
2. Lifestyle Modifications: Since you mentioned sleep deprivation and late nights, addressing these lifestyle factors could be beneficial. Ensuring adequate sleep, maintaining a balanced diet, and managing stress can have a positive impact on your overall health and may alleviate some discomfort.
3. Pain Management: Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen may help manage your discomfort temporarily. However, it’s essential to use these medications as directed and consult a healthcare provider if the pain persists.
4. Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of any changes in your symptoms. If you develop additional symptoms such as fever, significant changes in appetite, or any new gastrointestinal symptoms, seek medical attention promptly.
Conclusion
While the pain you are experiencing may not be indicative of a severe condition, it is essential to take it seriously, especially since it has persisted for over a week. A healthcare professional can provide a more accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment plan tailored to your specific situation. Taking proactive steps to address your lifestyle habits and seeking medical advice will be beneficial in managing your symptoms effectively.
