Gynecomastia in males, the previous article may have been incorrect?
I apologize for the confusion regarding the previous response about thyroid issues.
However, I have questions regarding gynecomastia.
Doctor, I have several concerns about this condition, which has caused me significant distress, leading to feelings of inferiority and severely impacting my social life.
A few days ago, I visited a general surgery clinic recommended by the metabolic department at Cheng Kung University.
Upon entering, the doctor immediately referred me to another physician, who saw me for only a brief moment.
By 11:30 PM, I was dismissed after just a few sentences.
An ultrasound was performed, confirming gynecomastia, but I was told it was not a concern.
The doctor was unwilling to provide further explanation, and their attitude was quite uncomfortable, leaving me very upset.
This experience reminded me of my childhood with rheumatoid arthritis, when my parents were told I was fine, only to later be diagnosed with the condition.
I left speechless, unsure of what to say, but my issues remain unresolved.
Therefore, I have the following questions:
1.
Which specialty should I consult for this condition? General surgery? Plastic surgery?
2.
Are there any recommended hospitals in Tainan that perform this surgery, or in nearby counties?
3.
I read that there is health insurance coverage for this condition; is that still available?

Hello,
1.
Breast surgery or general surgery, plastic surgery is also an option.
2.
I am not very familiar with Tainan.
3.
Depending on the symptoms, if they affect physiological or psychological conditions, surgical removal may be indicated, and it is covered by health insurance.
Wishing you peace and health,

More Info
Gynecomastia, or the enlargement of breast tissue in males, can be a distressing condition that affects not only physical appearance but also emotional well-being and social interactions. It is understandable that you are seeking help and treatment options in Taiwan, especially after your recent experience with a healthcare provider that left you feeling dismissed and frustrated.
To address your questions:
1. Which Specialty to Consult?
Gynecomastia can be evaluated by several medical specialties. Generally, you may start with a visit to an endocrinologist, as they specialize in hormonal issues that could contribute to gynecomastia. An urologist may also be involved, particularly if there are concerns about hormonal imbalances or other underlying conditions. If surgical intervention is considered, a plastic surgeon or general surgeon with experience in gynecomastia surgery would be the appropriate specialist to consult. It is essential to find a physician who is knowledgeable about the condition and can provide a thorough evaluation and explanation of your options.
2. Recommended Hospitals in Tainan or Nearby Cities:
In Tainan, you can consider visiting Tainan Municipal Hospital or National Cheng Kung University Hospital. Both institutions have departments that deal with endocrinology and surgery. If you are willing to travel a bit further, Kaohsiung Medical University Hospital or Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital are also reputable options with experienced surgeons who perform gynecomastia surgery. It is advisable to call ahead and inquire specifically about their experience with gynecomastia cases and the availability of consultations.
3. Health Insurance Coverage:
In Taiwan, gynecomastia surgery may be covered by the National Health Insurance (NHI) if it is deemed medically necessary. This typically means that the condition is causing significant psychological distress or physical discomfort. To qualify for coverage, you would need a thorough evaluation by a specialist who can document the impact of gynecomastia on your quality of life. It is essential to discuss this aspect with your healthcare provider to understand the criteria for insurance coverage and the necessary documentation.
Additional Considerations:
It is important to approach this condition holistically. Besides surgical options, there may be non-surgical treatments available, such as medications that address hormonal imbalances if they are identified as a contributing factor. Lifestyle changes, including diet and exercise, can also play a role in managing gynecomastia, particularly if it is related to weight gain or hormonal fluctuations.
Given your past experiences, I encourage you to seek out a healthcare provider who listens to your concerns and takes the time to explain your condition and treatment options thoroughly. It may take some time to find the right specialist, but persistence is key. Support groups or online forums can also provide valuable insights and emotional support from others who have faced similar challenges.
In conclusion, gynecomastia is a manageable condition, and with the right medical support, you can find a treatment plan that works for you. Don't hesitate to advocate for yourself and seek out the care you deserve.
