Height
Hello, doctor.
I am currently 22 years old.
Is it still possible for me to grow taller through exercise? I have adjusted my bicycle seat very high, so that only my toes touch the ground! I feel that it is difficult to ride the bike because my legs are short.
Could this cause any injuries?
Yao, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2002/05/25
Dr. Shi Qiming reply Orthopedics
Orthopedic Response: (1) Once the growth plates of the spine and long bones in the limbs close in an average person, bone growth ceases, and height will no longer change.
No exercise can increase height for a twenty-year-old.
(2) Potential injuries from raising the bicycle seat include: 1.
Decreased emergency stopping ability.
2.
If the handlebars are lowered, similar to how race car drivers ride, the wrists, upper limbs, shoulders, and back must bear increased strain, leading to fatigue during prolonged cycling.

More Info
At the age of 22, the likelihood of increasing height through exercise is extremely low. By this age, most individuals have experienced the closure of their growth plates, which are areas of developing cartilage tissue near the ends of long bones. Once these growth plates close, typically around the late teens to early twenties, the bones can no longer grow in length, and thus, height cannot be increased through any form of exercise, nutrition, or supplementation.
While exercise is essential for overall health and well-being, it does not contribute to height increase in adults. Engaging in regular physical activity can improve posture, muscle tone, and overall body composition, which may create the illusion of being taller, but it does not actually increase bone length. Therefore, focusing on a balanced diet, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and engaging in activities that promote good posture and flexibility is far more beneficial than attempting to increase height at this stage.
Regarding your concern about adjusting your bicycle seat height, it is crucial to ensure that your bike is set up correctly to prevent injuries. If your seat is too high, it can lead to several issues, including reduced control over the bike, increased strain on your knees, and discomfort in your lower back. When riding, your feet should be able to touch the ground comfortably when you are stopped, and your legs should have a slight bend when the pedal is at its lowest point. This setup helps to maintain proper biomechanics while cycling, reducing the risk of injury and ensuring a more enjoyable riding experience.
In terms of exercise, activities such as cycling, swimming, and stretching can promote overall fitness and flexibility, but they will not affect your height at this age. Instead, consider focusing on exercises that enhance your core strength and posture, such as yoga or Pilates, which can help you appear taller and more confident.
In summary, while exercise is vital for maintaining health and fitness, it will not help you grow taller at the age of 22. Instead, prioritize a balanced diet, regular physical activity, and proper bike ergonomics to ensure your overall well-being. If you have concerns about your height or any physical discomfort while cycling, consulting with a healthcare professional or a physical therapist may provide you with personalized advice and solutions.
