Pain During Self-Exploration and Discharge Concerns - Obstetrics and Gynecology

It hurts when touched?

Hello, doctor:
1.
It's quite awkward, but after being with my husband, I experience prolonged pain when I touch my labia with my hands.
What could be the reason for this?
2.
During my ovulation period, I notice an increase in yellowish discharge, but there is no odor.
Does this indicate an infection? I've been busy lately and will visit the clinic another day.
Thank you.

Dr. Lin Wenbin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

After sexual intercourse, the skin may inevitably experience irritation.
If there are signs of infection, it is important to seek medical attention promptly.
Generally, the discharge during the ovulation period is clear and colorless; however, when exposed to air for an extended period, it can turn yellow and develop an odor due to bacterial decomposition.
Based on your description, there may not necessarily be an issue, but it is better to have an examination for clarity.

Hello! Thank you for reaching out with your questions regarding your experiences and concerns. It’s completely understandable to feel awkward discussing intimate health issues, but it’s important to address them for your well-being.

1. Pain During Self-Exploration: Experiencing pain while exploring your body, particularly in the genital area, can be attributed to several factors. One common reason could be insufficient lubrication. The vagina and vulva are sensitive areas, and if they are not adequately lubricated, friction can cause discomfort or pain. This can happen during self-exploration or sexual activity. Additionally, if there is any tension or anxiety associated with the act, it can lead to muscle tightening, which may also contribute to discomfort.

Another possibility is that you might be experiencing a condition known as vulvodynia, which is characterized by chronic pain in the vulvar area without an identifiable cause. It’s essential to pay attention to your body and note if the pain persists or worsens. If you notice any other symptoms, such as swelling, redness, or changes in the skin, it would be wise to consult with a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation.

2. Yellow Discharge During Ovulation: It’s common for women to experience changes in vaginal discharge throughout their menstrual cycle. During ovulation, the discharge can become more abundant and may appear yellowish due to increased cervical mucus production. If the discharge does not have a foul odor, is not accompanied by itching, burning, or irritation, and is consistent with your normal cycle, it may not indicate an infection. However, if you notice any unusual changes, such as a strong odor, significant color change, or discomfort, it’s advisable to seek medical attention to rule out any infections or other conditions.

In both cases, it’s crucial to listen to your body. If the pain during self-exploration continues or if you have concerns about your discharge, I recommend scheduling an appointment with your healthcare provider. They can perform a physical examination, discuss your symptoms in detail, and provide you with personalized advice and treatment options.

Remember, discussing these topics with a healthcare professional can help alleviate your concerns and ensure that you maintain good reproductive health. Don’t hesitate to reach out for help, as it’s a vital part of self-care. Take care, and I hope you find the answers and relief you seek!
