Hibiscus tea and bleeding?

Hello, my girlfriend recently underwent a medical abortion, and during her follow-up appointment, the doctor confirmed that it was successful and that the amount of bleeding was gradually decreasing.
However, yesterday she accidentally drank some hibiscus tea, and she noticed an increase in bleeding.
Is this normal? What should we be aware of? How can we alleviate this?

Jie, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2014/02/22

Dr. Lü Lizheng reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

It is possible that hibiscus tea has a blood-activating effect, which could lead to an increase in bleeding.
If the amount of bleeding is not excessive, you can stop consuming it, and after a day or two, it should naturally decrease.
However, if the bleeding exceeds the usual menstrual flow, continues to increase, or is accompanied by abdominal pain or foul-smelling discharge, these indicate an abnormal condition, and you must seek further examination and treatment at a hospital.
Sincerely, Dr.

More Info

After a miscarriage, particularly following a medical abortion, it is crucial to be cautious about what you consume, including herbal teas like hibiscus tea. Hibiscus tea is known for its potential health benefits, including its antioxidant properties and its ability to lower blood pressure. However, it also has properties that can stimulate uterine contractions, which may not be ideal during the recovery phase after a miscarriage.

In your case, the increase in bleeding after consuming hibiscus tea could be attributed to its uterine-stimulating effects. While some bleeding can be normal as the body expels remaining tissue and returns to its non-pregnant state, any significant increase in bleeding should be taken seriously. It is essential to monitor the amount and nature of the bleeding. If the bleeding becomes heavy (soaking through a pad in an hour or less), is accompanied by severe pain, or includes large clots, it is advisable to seek medical attention immediately.

Here are some important considerations and recommendations for your girlfriend's recovery after a miscarriage:
1. Hydration: It is vital to stay well-hydrated, especially if there is any bleeding. Water is the best choice, as it helps maintain overall health and supports recovery.

2. Avoid Certain Foods and Drinks: After a miscarriage, it is generally recommended to avoid herbal teas that may stimulate the uterus, such as hibiscus, as well as other herbal remedies unless cleared by a healthcare provider. Caffeine and alcohol should also be limited during recovery.

3. Rest and Recovery: Encourage your girlfriend to rest and avoid strenuous activities. The body needs time to heal, and adequate rest can support this process.

4. Follow-Up Care: It is essential to attend all follow-up appointments with the healthcare provider. These visits are crucial for monitoring recovery and ensuring that there are no complications, such as retained tissue or infection.

5. Emotional Support: Miscarriage can be an emotionally challenging experience. Providing emotional support and understanding is vital. Encourage open communication about feelings and consider seeking counseling if needed.

6. Signs of Complications: Be aware of signs that may indicate complications, such as persistent or severe abdominal pain, fever, or foul-smelling discharge. If any of these symptoms occur, it is important to contact a healthcare provider promptly.

In summary, while hibiscus tea has its benefits, it may not be the best choice during the recovery phase after a miscarriage due to its potential effects on uterine contractions. Monitoring the situation closely and consulting with a healthcare provider for personalized advice is the best course of action. If there are any concerns about bleeding or other symptoms, do not hesitate to seek medical attention.
