Royal Jelly

I would like to ask if it is safe to consume royal jelly while regularly taking Dostinex for a pituitary tumor caused by elevated prolactin levels.
Will it have any effects? Thank you.

QQ, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2014/05/13

Dr. Chen Shuzi reply Pharmacology

Hello! DOSTINEX, known in Chinese as 過乳降錠, contains the active ingredient Cabergoline 0.5 mg.
It is used to treat hyperprolactinemia in women or to suppress lactation.
Its absorption is not affected by food, and the effects typically begin to manifest approximately three hours after administration.
In principle, food intake does not influence its efficacy.

When considering the use of royal jelly while on Dostinex (cabergoline) for managing high prolactin levels due to a pituitary tumor, it's important to understand both the pharmacological effects of the medication and the potential interactions with dietary supplements like royal jelly.

Dostinex is a dopamine agonist primarily used to treat hyperprolactinemia, which is an elevated level of prolactin in the blood. Prolactin is a hormone produced by the pituitary gland, and high levels can lead to various health issues, including menstrual irregularities and infertility. By stimulating dopamine receptors, Dostinex effectively reduces prolactin secretion from the pituitary gland, thereby addressing the underlying condition.

Royal jelly, on the other hand, is a substance produced by honeybees and is often marketed as a health supplement. It is rich in nutrients and has been associated with various health benefits, including anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. However, there is limited scientific evidence regarding its effects on hormonal levels, particularly prolactin.

From the information available, there is no direct evidence suggesting that royal jelly interacts negatively with Dostinex or exacerbates the conditions treated by the medication. However, it is crucial to consider a few factors:
1. Hormonal Effects: While royal jelly is not known to significantly influence prolactin levels, it does contain phytoestrogens, which can mimic estrogen in the body. Since Dostinex is used to lower prolactin levels, introducing substances that may have hormonal effects could potentially complicate treatment. It is advisable to monitor any changes in symptoms or hormonal levels when introducing new supplements.

2. Consultation with Healthcare Provider: Before adding royal jelly or any other supplement to your regimen, it is essential to discuss this with your healthcare provider. They can provide personalized advice based on your medical history, current treatment plan, and any potential risks associated with combining supplements with prescribed medications.

3. Monitoring for Side Effects: If you decide to take royal jelly while on Dostinex, be vigilant for any side effects or changes in your condition. This includes monitoring for any resurgence of symptoms related to high prolactin levels or any new symptoms that may arise.

4. Individual Variability: Each individual may respond differently to supplements and medications. Factors such as age, overall health, and the presence of other medical conditions can influence how your body reacts to royal jelly while on Dostinex.

In summary, while there is no strong evidence to suggest that royal jelly would adversely affect the treatment of high prolactin levels with Dostinex, caution is warranted. It is always best to consult with your healthcare provider before making any changes to your treatment plan. They can help ensure that any supplements you consider will not interfere with your medication or overall health.
