The baby has white discharge?

Hello Doctor: My baby is currently a little over two months old.
Recently, I noticed white discharge.
Previously, at the postpartum care center, the nurses bathed her and did not notice anything unusual.
After bringing her home, I saw my mother-in-law open her labia after bathing and discovered it, so I'm not sure how long it has been there.
Is this a normal phenomenon, or could it be a vaginal infection? Thank you!

Xiao Mi, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2014/05/27

Dr. Xiao Kaiwen reply Pediatrics

The presence of white discharge in a newborn female's vagina is primarily due to the temporary effects of maternal hormones during pregnancy.
This condition will improve as the hormones are metabolized.

When it comes to a two-month-old baby experiencing white discharge, it is important to understand the context and the common physiological changes that occur in newborns. In many cases, the presence of white discharge in female infants can be attributed to the effects of maternal hormones. During pregnancy, a mother’s hormones, particularly estrogen, can influence the development of the baby, and after birth, these hormones may still be present in the infant's system for a short period. This can lead to the appearance of white discharge, which is typically benign and resolves on its own as the hormones dissipate from the baby’s body.

In the absence of other symptoms, such as redness, swelling, or an unusual odor, the white discharge is usually not a cause for concern. It is essential to monitor the situation and ensure that the baby is otherwise healthy. If the discharge persists, changes in color, consistency, or if any signs of discomfort arise, it would be prudent to consult a pediatrician for further evaluation.
In terms of distinguishing between normal discharge and a potential infection, it is crucial to consider the overall health of the baby. Signs of infection may include fever, irritability, or unusual fussiness, as well as any visible signs of irritation or inflammation in the genital area. If any of these symptoms are present, it would be advisable to seek medical attention promptly.

Additionally, it is important to maintain proper hygiene when caring for a newborn. This includes gentle cleaning of the genital area during baths and ensuring that the area is kept dry to prevent any potential irritation or infection.
In summary, while the presence of white discharge in a two-month-old baby girl can often be attributed to hormonal influences and is typically normal, it is essential to remain vigilant for any accompanying symptoms that may indicate an infection. Regular check-ups with a pediatrician can help ensure that any concerns are addressed promptly and that the baby remains healthy. If there are any doubts or if the discharge changes in nature, seeking medical advice is always the best course of action.
