Burning sensation during urination?
Hello, Doctor Hsu.
I had a circumcision surgery on Tuesday, and it has been five days since then.
For these five days, I have been following the surgeon's advice to wrap my penis with an elastic bandage.
It might be because I wrapped it too tightly, but I feel some obstruction when urinating and have to exert some effort to urinate.
Over the past two days, I have noticed a burning sensation while urinating, along with a slight stinging pain.
The burning sensation persists for a while after I finish urinating.
Am I experiencing some urethritis? Thank you, Doctor!

Dr. Xu Weikai reply Urology
Hello, Jiejie: Urinary tract inflammation can cause pain and is usually accompanied by discharge.
A proper examination is necessary to determine the exact cause.
If possible, please undergo tests for urine and urethral discharge.
If you have any further questions, feel free to ask, and we can discuss and research together.

After undergoing a circumcision, it is not uncommon to experience various urinary symptoms, including pain and discomfort. Your description of feeling a sense of obstruction while urinating, along with a burning sensation and mild stinging, raises some important considerations regarding your post-operative recovery.
Firstly, it is essential to understand that circumcision is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of the foreskin from the penis. This can lead to temporary changes in the sensitivity of the glans (the head of the penis) and may also affect the urinary tract. The use of an elastic bandage, while intended to provide support and minimize swelling, can sometimes be too tight, leading to discomfort and potential issues with urination. If the bandage is constricting, it could be contributing to the sensation of obstruction you are experiencing.
The burning sensation during urination could indicate several possibilities. One common cause is irritation of the urethra, which can occur post-surgery due to the healing process. The urethra is the tube that carries urine from the bladder out of the body, and any trauma or irritation can lead to inflammation, resulting in symptoms such as burning or stinging during urination. This is often referred to as urethritis, which can be caused by various factors, including surgical trauma, infection, or irritation from urine.
It is also worth noting that after any surgical procedure, especially one involving the genital area, there can be a heightened sensitivity to sensations, including pain and discomfort. This can be exacerbated by the healing process, where scar tissue forms and nerves regenerate. The fact that you are experiencing a lingering acidic sensation after urination suggests that there may be some inflammation present, which could be a normal part of the healing process.
However, if the symptoms persist or worsen, it is crucial to consult your healthcare provider. They may want to rule out any potential infections, such as a urinary tract infection (UTI), which can occur after surgery. Symptoms of a UTI can include burning during urination, increased frequency of urination, and sometimes even fever or chills if the infection is more severe. A simple urine test can help determine if an infection is present.
In the meantime, here are some recommendations to help alleviate your symptoms:
1. Hydration: Ensure you are drinking plenty of fluids to help dilute your urine, which may reduce irritation during urination.
2. Warm Compresses: Applying a warm compress to the area may help soothe discomfort and promote blood flow, aiding in the healing process.
3. Avoid Tight Bandaging: If the elastic bandage feels too tight, consider loosening it or discussing with your doctor about alternative methods of support that may be more comfortable.
4. Pain Relief: Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen, may help manage discomfort, but consult your doctor before taking any medication.
5. Follow-Up: Schedule a follow-up appointment with your surgeon or urologist to discuss your symptoms and ensure that your recovery is on track.
In conclusion, while some discomfort and changes in urination can be expected after circumcision, persistent or severe symptoms warrant further evaluation. Your healthcare provider can offer the best guidance tailored to your specific situation and ensure that your recovery proceeds smoothly.
