After circumcision, I want to urinate after applying the medication?

Hello Doctor, I had a circumcision two weeks ago (using a circumcision device).
Since I need to apply medication daily, I have to retract the foreskin.
However, sometimes after applying the medication and returning the foreskin, I feel a constant urge to urinate, which can lead to a burning sensation or even sharp pain.
Additionally, I feel the urge to urinate immediately after drinking water.
Currently, I feel that the wound is healing well, with only one stitch remaining, and there is no swelling.
Is this situation abnormal? I would greatly appreciate your assistance.
Thank you very much.

Hello: The symptoms you are experiencing should not be associated with the circumcision procedure.
It is recommended that you return for a follow-up appointment.
At the very least, a urinalysis should be conducted.
Wishing you good health.

Post-circumcision urination issues, such as pain and urgency, can be concerning for patients who have recently undergone the procedure. It’s important to understand that some discomfort and changes in urination patterns can be normal in the weeks following circumcision, but there are also factors that could indicate complications.

Firstly, after circumcision, the glans (the head of the penis) is exposed for the first time, which can lead to increased sensitivity. This sensitivity can manifest as a burning or stinging sensation during urination, especially if the area is still healing. The application of ointments or medications to the surgical site may also contribute to irritation, particularly if they come into contact with the urethra or if the area is not rinsed properly after application.

The urgency to urinate that you are experiencing could be related to several factors:
1. Inflammation: The surgical site may still be inflamed, which can cause discomfort and a sensation of urgency. This inflammation can lead to increased sensitivity in the surrounding tissues, making you feel like you need to urinate more frequently.

2. Nerve Sensitivity: After surgery, the nerves in the area may be more sensitive than usual. This heightened sensitivity can lead to a feeling of urgency even when the bladder is not full.

3. Infection: While it sounds like your wound is healing well, it’s important to be aware of the signs of infection, such as increased pain, redness, swelling, or discharge from the surgical site. If you notice any of these symptoms, it would be wise to consult your healthcare provider.

4. Urethral Irritation: If the ointment or any other substance has come into contact with the urethra, it could cause irritation, leading to a burning sensation during urination. It’s essential to ensure that any topical medications are applied carefully and that the area is cleaned properly afterward.

5. Psychological Factors: Sometimes, anxiety about urination after surgery can lead to a heightened awareness of bodily sensations, which can exacerbate feelings of urgency.

Given that you mentioned the wound is healing and there is no swelling, it is a positive sign. However, if the burning sensation persists or worsens, or if you develop any new symptoms, it would be advisable to reach out to your healthcare provider for further evaluation. They may want to check for any signs of infection or other complications that could be contributing to your symptoms.

In the meantime, here are some general recommendations to help manage your symptoms:
- Hydration: Drink plenty of water to help dilute your urine, which may reduce irritation during urination.

- Gentle Cleaning: Ensure that you are cleaning the area gently but thoroughly, avoiding any harsh soaps or irritants.

- Pain Management: Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, may help alleviate discomfort, but consult your doctor before taking any medication.

- Follow-Up: Keep your follow-up appointments with your healthcare provider to monitor your healing process and address any concerns.

In summary, while some discomfort and urgency can be expected after circumcision, persistent or worsening symptoms should be evaluated by a healthcare professional to rule out any complications. Your healing process is unique, and it’s essential to communicate openly with your doctor about your experiences and concerns.
