Glans issues
A few days ago, the glans became very sticky.
When I pulled back the foreskin before an erection, the foreskin was stuck to the glans.
Over the past two days, the glans has developed a mucous layer, and the area just below the glans is very red.
I have been pulling back the foreskin to wash the glans while showering.
What could be the issue?

Dr. Xu Weikai reply Urology
Wang: Hello, you may have balanitis.
Increase the frequency of cleaning.
When cleaning, use only water; do not use soap or any body wash products.
After cleaning, apply petroleum jelly (available at drugstores) locally.
Additionally, if you experience redness, swelling, or severe pain, you need to seek medical attention.
If there are any unclear points, feel free to ask again, and we can discuss and research further.

The symptoms you are describing—sticky glans (the head of the penis) and redness—can be indicative of several conditions, most commonly related to inflammation or infection. Here’s a breakdown of potential causes, along with suggested solutions and preventive measures.
Possible Causes
1. Balanitis: This is an inflammation of the glans, often caused by poor hygiene, irritants, or infections (bacterial or fungal). Symptoms include redness, swelling, and discharge, which can lead to the sticky sensation you are experiencing.
2. Candida Infection: A yeast infection can also cause similar symptoms. It is more common in individuals with diabetes or those who are immunocompromised. The glans may appear red and inflamed, and there may be a thick, white discharge.
3. Contact Dermatitis: This occurs when the glans come into contact with irritants such as soaps, lotions, or other chemicals. Symptoms include redness and irritation.
4. Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs): Certain STIs can cause symptoms like redness and discharge. If you have had unprotected sexual contact, it is important to consider this possibility.
5. Phimosis: If the foreskin is too tight to retract fully, it can lead to irritation and inflammation of the glans, causing discomfort and redness.
Solutions and Recommendations
1. Maintain Hygiene: Ensure that you are cleaning the area properly. Gently retract the foreskin (if applicable) and wash the glans with mild soap and water. Avoid using harsh soaps or chemicals that can irritate the skin.
2. Topical Treatments: Over-the-counter antifungal creams can be effective if a yeast infection is suspected. If you suspect a bacterial infection, a topical antibiotic may be necessary, but this should be prescribed by a healthcare professional.
3. Avoid Irritants: If you suspect that soaps, lotions, or other products are causing irritation, discontinue their use. Opt for hypoallergenic products designed for sensitive skin.
4. Consult a Healthcare Provider: If symptoms persist or worsen, it is crucial to see a healthcare provider. They can perform a physical examination, possibly run tests, and provide a definitive diagnosis. This is especially important if you suspect an STI or if there is no improvement with home care.
5. Consider Sexual Health: If you are sexually active, consider discussing your symptoms with your partner and getting tested for STIs. It’s important for both partners to be aware of potential infections.
6. Avoid Sexual Activity: Until the symptoms resolve, it may be wise to avoid sexual activity to prevent further irritation or potential transmission of infections.
Preventive Measures
- Regular Hygiene: Regularly clean the genital area, especially if you are uncircumcised. This helps prevent the buildup of smegma, which can cause irritation.
- Safe Sex Practices: Use condoms to reduce the risk of STIs and maintain open communication with sexual partners about health.
- Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of any changes in symptoms, such as increased redness, swelling, or discharge, and seek medical attention if necessary.
In summary, while the symptoms you are experiencing can be concerning, they are often manageable with proper hygiene and care. However, if there is no improvement or if you have any doubts, consulting a healthcare professional is the best course of action to ensure appropriate treatment and care.
