Menstruation is delayed, but there are no premenstrual symptoms?
Hello Doctor: My menstrual cycle is usually very regular or arrives early, but this month it has not come yet, and I am already 6 days late (it was expected on 10/13).
I took a pregnancy test on 10/15, but it showed one line.
Typically, I experience premenstrual symptoms (breast tenderness, mouth sores, lower back pain) about a week before my period, but this time I have not had any of those symptoms, and everything feels normal.
It wasn't until 10/16 that I started to feel more pain in the area of my fibrocystic breast condition, but my breasts still feel soft, and I have not experienced any other symptoms.
Additionally, I have noticed an increase in clear, white discharge.
Is it possible that I could be pregnant? My previous menstrual dates were 7/15, 8/15, and 9/14.
The dates I had intercourse were 9/25, 28, and 29, as I was very anxious about possibly missing my period again.
I am unsure how many days I should wait before taking another test for more accurate results, so I would like to ask if it is possible that I could be pregnant? Also, when would be a good time to visit the hospital? Thank you!

Based on the timeline since the last sexual intercourse, which was on September 29, it has been over three weeks.
Since you also did not test positive for pregnancy on October 15, if you take another test in a week and still do not show a positive result, it is likely that you are not pregnant.
Sincerely, Dr.

When it comes to missed periods and the possibility of pregnancy, it’s essential to consider several factors, including your menstrual cycle regularity, timing of sexual activity, and any symptoms you may be experiencing. Based on your description, you typically have a regular cycle, with your last period starting on September 14. If your period was expected on October 13 and you have not experienced any premenstrual symptoms (PMS) that you usually do, it raises the question of whether you could be pregnant.
Firstly, the absence of PMS symptoms can be concerning, especially if you are accustomed to experiencing them consistently. PMS symptoms, such as breast tenderness, mood swings, and abdominal cramps, are caused by hormonal fluctuations in your body. If these symptoms are absent, it could indicate a hormonal imbalance or other factors affecting your cycle.
You mentioned that you had sexual intercourse on September 25, 28, and 29, which places those dates within your fertile window, especially if you have a typical 28-30 day cycle. Sperm can live inside the female reproductive tract for up to five days, meaning that if ovulation occurred shortly after your last sexual encounter, there is a possibility of conception.
You took a pregnancy test on October 15, which was six days after your missed period, and it showed a negative result. Home pregnancy tests are generally reliable, especially when taken after a missed period. However, if you tested too early or if the test was not sensitive enough, it could yield a false negative. It is advisable to wait a few days and retest, preferably with the first morning urine, which contains the highest concentration of the pregnancy hormone hCG.
Regarding the symptoms you mentioned, such as increased white, transparent discharge and localized pain in the area of a fibrocystic lump, these could be related to hormonal changes in your body rather than pregnancy. Increased discharge can occur due to various reasons, including hormonal fluctuations, ovulation, or even infections. The localized pain could also be attributed to the fibrocystic condition, which is common and often exacerbated by hormonal changes.
If your period does not arrive within a week of your missed date, I recommend consulting with a healthcare provider. They can perform a more sensitive blood test to check for pregnancy and evaluate any other underlying issues that may be affecting your menstrual cycle. Additionally, they can provide guidance on managing symptoms related to fibrocystic breast changes, which can sometimes be uncomfortable.
In summary, while there is a possibility of pregnancy given the timing of your sexual activity, the negative pregnancy test and absence of typical PMS symptoms suggest that other factors may be at play. It is essential to monitor your symptoms and consider retesting in a few days or seeking medical advice if your period does not arrive soon. Remember, stress and lifestyle changes can also impact your menstrual cycle, so maintaining a balanced routine is crucial for your overall health.
