Chronic sinusitis

Hello, doctor.
I have allergies, but my condition has changed so that I don't often sneeze.
Recently, I have noticed that my symptoms are very similar to chronic sinusitis, with nasal symptoms and systemic symptoms almost identical.
I feel mentally fatigued every day, constantly wanting to sleep, and the exhaustion is very distressing.
However, Western medicine is treating me with medications for Meniere's disease (I have undergone ultrasound and X-rays).
I wonder if traditional Chinese medicine can provide a cure?

XOF, 40~49 year old female. Ask Date: 2015/04/16

Dr. Hou Yuchang reply Traditional Chinese Medicine

Dear XOF,
Hello.
Due to the unclear nature of your description, I can only respond as follows: The diagnosis of chronic sinusitis has specific criteria and generally requires special X-rays or a CT scan of the head for confirmation.
It is not appropriate to make this diagnosis solely based on symptoms.
Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) approaches from a symptomatic perspective, but since your described symptoms are quite common, there are many potential factors involved, making it difficult to determine if TCM can provide a cure.
Additionally, Western medicine considers Meniere's disease, and certain symptoms may lead physicians to think along those lines.
If you feel this is inappropriate, there are two aspects to consider: first, your symptom description may be unclear or inconsistent, leading the physician to consider that condition; second, there may be communication issues between you and the physician, resulting in a lack of trust in the diagnosis.
I recommend seeking a second opinion from another otolaryngologist.
TCM requires a comprehensive understanding of the individual and their symptoms.
I suggest consulting a TCM physician at a public hospital in your area, as they tend to be more straightforward and less likely to use flowery language.
Additionally, please be patient, as the treatment for chronic sinusitis may take three to six months.
Wishing you a speedy recovery.
Sincerely,
Dr.

Chronic sinusitis, also known as chronic rhinosinusitis, is a condition characterized by prolonged inflammation of the sinuses, which can lead to various symptoms such as nasal congestion, facial pain or pressure, reduced sense of smell, and fatigue. The symptoms you describe, including fatigue and a feeling of malaise, are indeed common in individuals suffering from chronic sinusitis. It's important to note that while Western medicine often focuses on symptomatic relief through medications such as antihistamines, decongestants, or even antibiotics in cases of bacterial infection, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) offers a different approach that may be beneficial for some patients.

In TCM, chronic sinusitis is often viewed through the lens of the body's overall balance and the flow of Qi (energy) and blood. TCM practitioners may diagnose the condition based on a combination of symptoms, tongue appearance, and pulse diagnosis. The treatment may include acupuncture, herbal medicine, dietary recommendations, and lifestyle changes aimed at restoring balance and promoting the body's natural healing processes.

Acupuncture can be particularly effective in alleviating symptoms of sinusitis. By targeting specific acupuncture points, practitioners aim to reduce inflammation, improve sinus drainage, and enhance overall immune function. Common acupuncture points for sinusitis include those located on the face, hands, and feet, which can help relieve pressure and promote sinus drainage.

Herbal medicine is another cornerstone of TCM treatment for chronic sinusitis. Various herbal formulas may be prescribed based on the individual's specific symptoms and constitution. For example, formulas that clear heat and resolve phlegm may be used for patients with thick nasal discharge and facial pressure, while those that tonify Qi and nourish the lungs may be recommended for patients experiencing fatigue and weakness.

Dietary recommendations in TCM often emphasize the importance of consuming warm, nourishing foods while avoiding cold or damp foods that may exacerbate sinus issues. Foods such as ginger, garlic, and warm broths can be beneficial, while dairy products and processed foods may be best limited.

It's important to consult with a qualified TCM practitioner who can provide a personalized treatment plan based on your unique symptoms and constitution. While TCM may not "cure" chronic sinusitis in the conventional sense, many patients find significant relief from their symptoms and an improvement in their overall well-being through TCM approaches.

Additionally, it’s worth noting that chronic sinusitis can sometimes be associated with other underlying conditions, such as allergies or anatomical issues like nasal polyps or a deviated septum. If you have not already done so, it may be beneficial to seek a comprehensive evaluation from an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist to rule out any structural issues that may be contributing to your symptoms.

In summary, while Western medicine often focuses on symptomatic treatment, TCM offers a holistic approach that may provide relief for chronic sinusitis through acupuncture, herbal medicine, and dietary changes. Consulting with a qualified TCM practitioner can help you explore these options and determine the best course of action for your specific situation.
