Are you pregnant?

My menstrual period is consistently on the 18th of each month.
However, I had sexual intercourse with my boyfriend on the 7th, and he ejaculated inside me.
The next day, I felt some bloating and mild pain in my abdomen, but it went away after a few days.
Additionally, I had intercourse again on the 14th, with internal ejaculation, but my period did not arrive on the 18th as expected.
Why is this happening? Could I be pregnant?

Zhuang Xiaojie, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2015/07/18

Hello, based on your description, the chances of pregnancy are not low.
However, it is not possible to determine whether you are pregnant based solely on subjective symptoms.
I recommend that if your period does not arrive by July 25, you should take a urine test to check for pregnancy.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health.

When it comes to the possibility of pregnancy, understanding the timing of ovulation, the menstrual cycle, and the symptoms that may arise is crucial. Your menstrual cycle typically follows a pattern, and any deviations from that pattern can lead to concerns about pregnancy.
In your case, you mentioned that your menstrual period is usually regular, arriving on the 18th of each month. Engaging in unprotected intercourse, especially with ejaculation inside the vagina, can indeed lead to pregnancy if it occurs during your fertile window. The fertile window typically spans from about five days before ovulation to the day of ovulation itself. Ovulation usually occurs around 14 days before the start of your next period, which means if your cycle is 28 days long, ovulation would likely occur around the 14th day of your cycle.
Given that you had intercourse on the 7th and again on the 14th, it is possible that you could have conceived, especially if you ovulated shortly after the 14th. The abdominal discomfort you experienced after the 7th could be attributed to various factors, including ovulation pain (also known as mittelschmerz), which can occur when the ovary releases an egg. This discomfort is generally temporary and should resolve within a day or two.
The absence of your period on the expected date (the 18th) is a significant indicator that you might be pregnant. However, it is essential to consider other factors that could cause a missed period, such as stress, hormonal imbalances, changes in weight, or illness. If you are experiencing symptoms such as breast tenderness, nausea, fatigue, or frequent urination, these could further suggest pregnancy.

To confirm whether you are pregnant, the most reliable method is to take a home pregnancy test. These tests measure the level of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in your urine, which is produced shortly after a fertilized egg attaches to the uterine lining. For the most accurate results, it is best to take the test after your missed period, as this allows enough time for hCG levels to rise.

If the home pregnancy test is positive, it is advisable to schedule an appointment with a healthcare provider for further evaluation and prenatal care. If the test is negative and your period does not arrive, or if you continue to experience unusual symptoms, consulting a healthcare professional is recommended to rule out any underlying issues.

In summary, based on the information you provided, it is possible that you could be pregnant, especially considering the timing of your sexual activity relative to your menstrual cycle. Taking a home pregnancy test will provide you with a clearer answer, and if you have any concerns or questions, do not hesitate to reach out to a healthcare provider for guidance.
