Woke Up with Numbness and Tingling in Right Leg: What to Do? - Neurology

Waking up from sleep and noticing that the right foot is numb and tingling?

Hello doctor, my usual sleeping position is on my back, but this morning I woke up to find myself sleeping on my side (with my face turned to the left and my right leg leaning to the left).
When I got up, I felt a slight soreness and heaviness in my right leg.
At first, I didn't think much of it, but after a while, I started to notice a tingling sensation.
It doesn't affect my ability to walk or run, but there is still a slight feeling present.
This condition has persisted for a day now.
Should I wait for it to improve, or should I schedule an appointment?

Xiao Cheng, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2015/07/29

Dr. Lan Shengxing reply Neurology

Dear Xiao Cheng, the symptoms you described are likely due to temporary nerve compression.
Taking vitamin B complex may help alleviate the symptoms sooner.
If you experience any additional symptoms, it is advisable to visit a neurology clinic for further evaluation.

More Info

Waking up with numbness and tingling in your right leg can be concerning, especially if it persists for more than a few hours. This sensation is often related to nerve compression, which can occur due to sleeping in an awkward position, as you described. When you sleep on your side with your legs crossed or in a position that puts pressure on your nerves, it can lead to temporary numbness and tingling. This condition is commonly referred to as "paresthesia."
In your case, since you mentioned that the numbness and tingling have lasted for a day but do not affect your ability to walk or run, it is likely that this is a temporary issue. However, there are a few important considerations to keep in mind:
1. Duration and Severity: If the numbness and tingling do not improve within a few days, or if they worsen, it would be wise to consult a healthcare professional. Persistent symptoms could indicate a more serious underlying issue, such as a herniated disc, sciatica, or other nerve-related problems.

2. Associated Symptoms: Pay attention to any additional symptoms that may arise, such as weakness in the leg, loss of bladder or bowel control, or severe pain. If you experience any of these, seek medical attention immediately, as they could indicate a more serious condition.

3. Self-Care: In the meantime, you can try to alleviate the symptoms by changing your position frequently, stretching your legs, and gently massaging the affected area. Applying heat or cold packs may also help relieve discomfort.

4. Prevention: To prevent this from happening again, consider adjusting your sleeping position. Using a body pillow to support your legs or sleeping on your back with proper alignment can help reduce the risk of nerve compression.

5. When to Seek Help: If the numbness and tingling persist beyond a few days, or if you notice any changes in your mobility or strength, it is advisable to see a doctor. They may perform a physical examination and possibly recommend imaging studies, such as an MRI, to rule out any structural issues.

In summary, while your symptoms may be benign and related to your sleeping position, it is essential to monitor them closely. If they do not resolve or if you experience any concerning symptoms, do not hesitate to seek medical advice. Early intervention can help prevent potential complications and ensure that any underlying issues are addressed promptly.
