Numbness in the right leg?

Hello Doctor, since early June, when I lie flat to sleep, my right leg starts to feel numb from the sole to the thigh, with only about a five-second interval from lying down to the onset of numbness.
Recently, due to the leg numbness, I often have trouble sleeping and can only fall asleep when I am really exhausted.
A couple of weeks ago, I visited a rehabilitation specialist near my home, and the doctor took X-rays to rule out any lumbar spine issues.
At that time, he suspected that it might be piriformis syndrome causing sciatica.
However, even after taking the anti-inflammatory medication he prescribed, I still experience leg numbness, and I do not have any pain in my buttocks—just the numbness in my leg.
In the past week or two, I have also started to feel numbness in my leg even when standing, again from the sole to the thigh.
I wonder if this is related to the way I sleep, as I tend to sleep at an angle (with my upper body leaning to the left and my lower body to the right).
Previously, if my right leg was positioned normally in relation to my left leg, I would feel a slight discomfort, but recently it has progressed to numbness.
I have been trying to keep more distance between my legs, but even with the increased spacing, my right leg still feels numb and uncomfortable.
Doctor, what do you think is happening to me? How can I improve this? Thank you.

This consultation platform cannot provide diagnoses or treatments for conditions such as lumbar disc herniation, sciatica, and piriformis syndrome, which may all cause related symptoms.
Maintaining good posture can help avoid associated discomfort.
It is recommended to visit a neurology, orthopedic, or rehabilitation specialist for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment plan.

More Info

The symptoms you are experiencing, particularly the numbness in your right leg when lying down, can be quite concerning and disruptive to your sleep quality. Based on your description, it seems that the numbness starts shortly after you lie down, which suggests that there may be an underlying issue related to nerve compression or circulation.

Possible Causes
1. Nerve Compression: The most common cause of numbness in the legs, especially when lying down, is nerve compression. This can occur due to various reasons, including herniated discs, sciatica, or even tight muscles such as the piriformis muscle, which can compress the sciatic nerve.

2. Poor Sleep Position: You mentioned that you tend to sleep with your upper body leaning to one side and your lower body to the other. This position could potentially lead to compression of nerves or blood vessels in your legs, especially if your legs are crossed or positioned awkwardly.

3. Circulatory Issues: If you are experiencing numbness while standing as well, it could indicate a circulatory issue. Conditions such as peripheral artery disease can lead to reduced blood flow to the legs, causing numbness and discomfort.

4. Underlying Medical Conditions: Conditions such as diabetes, multiple sclerosis, or vitamin deficiencies (like B12) can also lead to numbness in the extremities.

Recommendations for Improvement
1. Adjust Your Sleep Position: Try to maintain a more neutral sleeping position. Sleeping on your back with a pillow under your knees can help relieve pressure on your spine and improve circulation. If you prefer side sleeping, ensure that your legs are aligned and not crossed, and consider using a pillow between your knees for added support.

2. Stretching and Strengthening Exercises: Incorporate stretching and strengthening exercises into your daily routine. Focus on the hip flexors, hamstrings, and lower back muscles, as tightness in these areas can contribute to nerve compression. Gentle yoga or physical therapy may also be beneficial.

3. Consult a Specialist: Since you have already seen a rehabilitation specialist and ruled out significant spinal issues, consider consulting a neurologist or an orthopedic specialist. They may recommend further imaging studies, such as an MRI, to assess for any nerve compression or other underlying issues that may not have been visible on X-rays.

4. Monitor Your Symptoms: Keep a journal of your symptoms, noting when they occur, their duration, and any activities that seem to exacerbate them. This information can be invaluable for your healthcare provider in diagnosing the issue.

5. Lifestyle Modifications: Ensure you are maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise, a balanced diet, and staying hydrated. Avoid prolonged periods of inactivity, as this can exacerbate circulatory issues.

6. Medication Review: If you are currently taking any medications, discuss with your doctor whether they could be contributing to your symptoms. Sometimes, medications can lead to side effects that include numbness or tingling.

Conclusion
The numbness in your right leg, particularly when lying down, can stem from various causes, including nerve compression, poor sleep posture, or circulatory issues. By adjusting your sleep position, incorporating stretching exercises, and consulting with a specialist, you can work towards alleviating your symptoms and improving your sleep quality. Remember, it is essential to address these symptoms early on to prevent them from becoming a chronic issue.
