Flashing or flickering lights in the eyes?
Today, while I was outside, I slipped and looked at my phone for about 7 minutes.
After entering the room, I suddenly noticed that the wall appeared to flicker between bright and dark (the frequency was similar to a car's turn signal).
After about 5 minutes, it returned to normal.
Additionally, when I woke up in the morning, I felt a flickering above my eyes, like a faulty light bulb, which disappeared shortly after (this happened about three times from morning to afternoon).
Later, I went to an optical shop (the ophthalmology clinic was closed), and they said it was an astigmatism issue and that I needed new lenses.
I would like to ask if this is really an astigmatism problem or if it could be related to retinal detachment or glaucoma.
Thank you, doctor, for your clarification.

Flickering vision, or the perception of intermittent flashes or flickers of light, can be a concerning symptom that may arise from various underlying causes. Based on your description, it seems that you experienced these flickering sensations after using your phone in a dimly lit environment and upon waking up. While the optical shop suggested that this might be related to astigmatism, it is essential to consider other potential causes, including retinal issues or neurological conditions.
Astigmatism is a common refractive error caused by an irregular shape of the cornea or lens, leading to blurred or distorted vision. However, the flickering sensation you described is not typically associated with astigmatism alone. Instead, it may indicate other ocular or neurological conditions that warrant further investigation.
One possible cause of flickering vision is a phenomenon known as "visual aura," which can occur with migraines. This can manifest as flickering lights, zigzag patterns, or temporary vision loss. If you have a history of migraines, this could be a plausible explanation for your symptoms.
Another important consideration is the possibility of retinal detachment or retinal tears. Symptoms of retinal issues can include flashes of light, floaters, or a sudden increase in visual disturbances. If you experience a significant change in your vision, especially if it is accompanied by other symptoms such as a shadow or curtain effect in your peripheral vision, it is crucial to seek immediate medical attention from an eye care professional.
Additionally, conditions such as glaucoma can cause visual disturbances, but they typically present with other symptoms, such as peripheral vision loss or eye pain. It is less common for glaucoma to present solely with flickering vision, but it is still essential to rule it out through comprehensive eye examinations.
Given the transient nature of your symptoms, it may not be an urgent situation, but it is still advisable to consult with an ophthalmologist or optometrist for a thorough evaluation. They can perform a comprehensive eye exam, including visual field testing, retinal examination, and possibly imaging studies, to assess the health of your eyes and rule out any serious conditions.
In summary, while astigmatism could be a contributing factor to your visual disturbances, it is essential to consider other potential causes, including migraine-related visual aura, retinal issues, or even neurological conditions. If your symptoms persist, worsen, or are accompanied by other concerning signs, do not hesitate to seek professional medical advice. Early detection and intervention are key to preserving your vision and overall eye health.
