Is a delayed period due to a medical condition or pregnancy? I'm really worried?

My last menstrual period was around July 4th, and it ended on July 11th or 12th.
On July 30th, I took a shower with my boyfriend, and we engaged in mutual touching.
He did not penetrate; he only used his hands and did not touch himself.
Later, he ejaculated on my hand, and I washed it off.
Five minutes later, I used body wash to clean my hands and touched myself down there.
On August 5th, I had gastroenteritis, and today is the 6th, and I still haven't gotten my period.
Could sperm have entered during the shower? Or is my period late because I am sick?

Ya Dan, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2015/08/07

Hello, based on your description, the chances of pregnancy are not high.
However, if your period is more than a week late, it is still necessary to take a test.
Aside from pregnancy, irregular ovulation, polycystic ovary syndrome, uterine or ovarian lesions, brain lesions, lifestyle factors, emotional state, diet, and age can also contribute to delayed menstruation.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health.

When it comes to missed periods, especially in the context of potential pregnancy, it’s important to consider several factors that could contribute to this situation. Based on your description, it seems you are experiencing anxiety regarding the possibility of being pregnant, as well as concerns about your health due to a recent illness. Let’s break down the various aspects of your situation.

First, regarding the missed period: A missed period can be caused by a variety of factors, including stress, hormonal imbalances, changes in weight, and medical conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or thyroid issues. Given that you mentioned experiencing gastrointestinal issues, it is possible that the stress and physical discomfort from your illness could have contributed to a delay in your menstrual cycle. Stress can significantly impact the hypothalamus, which regulates hormones that control the menstrual cycle.
Now, concerning the sexual activity you described, while it’s true that sperm can survive for a short time outside the body, the scenario you outlined (where your partner did not penetrate and you washed your hands before touching yourself) presents a very low risk of pregnancy. Sperm needs a direct pathway to the vagina to potentially fertilize an egg, and the actions you described do not suggest a high likelihood of this occurring. However, if there is any uncertainty or lingering anxiety about the situation, taking a home pregnancy test can provide clarity. These tests are generally reliable when taken after a missed period.

If the test is negative and your period still does not arrive, it would be advisable to consult with a healthcare provider. They can help determine if there are underlying health issues that need to be addressed. It’s also worth noting that if you have a history of irregular periods or other menstrual concerns, this could be a sign to seek further evaluation.

In addition to physical health considerations, it’s important to address your mental and emotional well-being. The anxiety surrounding potential pregnancy and health issues can be overwhelming. If you find yourself frequently worrying about your health or the possibility of pregnancy, it may be beneficial to speak with a mental health professional. They can provide strategies to manage anxiety and help you navigate these feelings more effectively.

In summary, while the missed period could be related to stress or illness, the specific circumstances you described suggest a low risk of pregnancy. However, if you continue to experience anxiety or if your period does not return, seeking medical advice is a prudent step. Remember, taking care of both your physical and mental health is crucial during this time.
