Severe side effects occurred after taking Fungitech?
Hello, Doctor: On August 15, I visited a dermatology clinic for my long-standing issue with onychomycosis (fungal nail infection).
The doctor prescribed me oral medication, terbinafine.
However, today marks the sixth day, and I am increasingly feeling strange.
I started to wonder if this could be a side effect of the medication.
Upon researching, I found many similar experiences.
1.
Headache: I occasionally experience headaches, but this time I had no other thoughts and took acetaminophen, which was ineffective (it usually works for my headaches).
2.
Nausea: While riding the bus home, I rarely experience motion sickness, but over the past few days, I have felt nauseous and even vomited.
Initially, I thought it was due to the long traffic, but now I suspect otherwise.
3.
Insomnia: I occasionally have trouble sleeping, but this week I have been unable to sleep every night.
4.
Itching: My scalp has been very itchy.
I initially thought it was due to the hot weather, so I washed my hair, but it remained itchy afterward.
5.
The most concerning issue is my mood.
I have been taking antidepressants, Xanax, and Wellbutrin for a long time, and my condition was relatively stable.
However, this week my temperament has suddenly changed; I am very irritable, easily angered, and anxious.
I initially thought my depression might be resurfacing, but due to the numerous physical discomforts, I suspect these symptoms began after starting the medication.
After researching, I found many symptoms that align with my experiences.
I am hesitant to continue taking this medication.
What should I do to alleviate these discomforts? Please help me.
Thank you!

Hello: First, I recommend that you stop using the antifungal medication for onychomycosis and promptly go to the hospital for a liver function test to ensure your liver function indices are normal.
Based on the results, your physician will decide whether to resume the medication.
After discontinuing the medication, general symptoms will gradually improve.
When you return for a follow-up appointment, your doctor should provide appropriate treatment, so please feel assured to leave it to the professionals.

More Info
It sounds like you are experiencing a range of concerning symptoms after starting the oral antifungal medication, Fungitech (likely Terbinafine or a similar drug), for your toenail fungus. The symptoms you describe—headaches, nausea, vomiting, insomnia, itching, and mood changes—are indeed concerning and may be related to the medication.
First and foremost, it is crucial to stop taking the medication immediately. Many antifungal medications can have side effects, and in some cases, these can be severe. The symptoms you are experiencing, particularly the mood changes and increased irritability, could be indicative of a more serious reaction, especially considering your history of taking antidepressants like Xanax and other medications.
Here are some steps you should take:
1. Consult Your Doctor: It is essential to reach out to your healthcare provider as soon as possible. They can evaluate your symptoms in the context of your overall health and medication history. They may recommend blood tests, particularly liver function tests, as some antifungal medications can affect liver function.
2. Symptom Management: While you await your doctor's appointment, focus on managing your symptoms. For headaches, staying hydrated and resting in a dark, quiet room may help. Over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen can be used, but if they are not effective, avoid taking more than the recommended dose.
3. Nausea and Vomiting: For nausea, consider ginger tea or over-the-counter anti-nausea medications if you have them available. Eating small, bland meals can also help settle your stomach.
4. Insomnia: Establishing a calming bedtime routine can help with sleep. This might include reducing screen time before bed, practicing relaxation techniques, or using white noise to help you fall asleep.
5. Itching: For the itching, consider using a gentle, hypoallergenic moisturizer on your scalp and skin. If the itching persists, your doctor may prescribe a topical treatment or recommend an antihistamine.
6. Mood Changes: Given your history with antidepressants, it’s important to monitor your mood closely. If you feel increasingly anxious or depressed, or if you have thoughts of self-harm, seek immediate help from a mental health professional or call emergency services.
7. Follow-Up: When you see your doctor, be prepared to discuss all the symptoms you have experienced, the timeline of when they started, and any other medications you are taking. This information will help them determine the best course of action.
In summary, your health and safety are paramount. Discontinuing the medication and consulting with your healthcare provider is the best course of action. They will be able to provide you with the appropriate care and guidance tailored to your specific situation. Remember, it’s important to advocate for your health and communicate openly with your healthcare team about any concerns you have regarding medications and their side effects.
