Rhinoplasty issues?
Hello Doctor, I had functional rhinoplasty two months ago, with sutures located on the columella and inside the nostrils.
I would like to know if the wounds have completely healed after two months.
Additionally, since the scars are around the nostrils, will forceful use of the nose or vigorous breathing cause the scars to hypertrophy or lead to inflammation of the wounds?

Hello: The wound has mostly healed after two months, and vigorous use of the nose or forceful breathing will not cause scar hypertrophy or wound inflammation.
Wishing you peace and health.
Sincerely, Dr.

After undergoing functional rhinoplasty, it is common to have concerns about the healing process and scar management. Based on your inquiry, it has been two months since your surgery, and you are wondering if your wounds have fully healed and whether activities such as forceful breathing could exacerbate scarring or inflammation.
Generally, after two months, most surgical wounds, especially those in the nasal area, are well on their way to healing. The initial phase of healing typically involves the formation of new tissue, which can take several weeks. By the two-month mark, the majority of the healing process should be complete, although complete maturation of the scar may take up to a year or more. It is important to note that while the surface of the skin may appear healed, deeper layers may still be undergoing repair.
Regarding your concern about scarring, it is unlikely that normal activities such as forceful breathing or using your nose will significantly impact the healing process or lead to increased scar formation. Scarring is primarily influenced by factors such as the surgical technique used, individual healing responses, and genetic predisposition to scarring. In most cases, the body’s natural healing mechanisms will manage the scar tissue effectively.
However, it is essential to monitor your healing closely. If you notice any signs of inflammation, such as increased redness, swelling, or discharge from the wound, it is advisable to consult your surgeon. Infections can occur post-surgery, and prompt attention is necessary to prevent complications.
In terms of scar management, there are several strategies you can consider to optimize the appearance of your scars. These include:
1. Moisturization: Keeping the scar area hydrated can help improve its appearance. Use a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer or silicone gel, which is known to be effective in scar management.
2. Sun Protection: Protecting the scar from sun exposure is crucial, as UV rays can darken scars and make them more noticeable. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 on the scarred area when exposed to sunlight.
3. Massage Therapy: Once the wound has fully healed, gentle massage of the scar tissue can help break down collagen fibers and improve the scar's texture and flexibility.
4. Consultation with Specialists: If you are concerned about the appearance of your scars, consider consulting a dermatologist or a plastic surgeon who specializes in scar revision. They can provide treatments such as laser therapy, microdermabrasion, or other interventions to improve scar appearance.
5. Avoiding Irritation: Be cautious with any products or activities that may irritate the scar area, as this can lead to increased inflammation and potential hypertrophic scarring.
In conclusion, while your wounds are likely well on their way to healing at the two-month mark, it is essential to continue monitoring your recovery and practice good scar management techniques. If you have any concerns or notice any unusual symptoms, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for further evaluation and guidance. Your health and comfort are paramount, and addressing any issues early can lead to better outcomes.
