Wisdom tooth extraction?

I would like to ask about a wound I have after having my wisdom teeth removed (two weeks ago).
After the stitches were taken out, there is a wound approximately 2-3 mm in size.
How long will it take for the wound to heal? How can I keep the wound clean before it heals? During the healing period, will food debris get trapped in the wound and potentially cause an infection? Thank you for your response!

Chen, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2002/06/26

Dr. Cao Guoqing reply Dentistry

If there is no infection after tooth extraction, the healing of the wound should be completed in three to four months.
The simplest method for oral hygiene before the wound heals is to rinse with salt water.
During the healing period, if food debris is kept clean, it should not get trapped in the wound, and the likelihood of infection is further reduced.
Thank you for your question, Dentist Tsao Kuo-Ching.

After wisdom tooth extraction, the healing process can vary significantly from person to person, but generally, you can expect the initial healing of the gum tissue to take about 1 to 2 weeks. However, complete healing, where the bone is fully covered and the gum tissue is entirely restored, may take anywhere from 4 to 6 weeks or even longer, depending on various factors such as your age, overall health, and how well you follow post-operative care instructions.

In your case, since you had the extraction two weeks ago and have a wound measuring about 2-3 mm, it is reasonable to expect that the wound should start to heal within the next couple of weeks. The gum tissue typically begins to close up around the extraction site, and you should see a reduction in the size of the wound as the days go by. However, if you still see bone or if the wound appears to be worsening, it is essential to consult your dentist or oral surgeon for a follow-up examination.

Maintaining cleanliness around the extraction site is crucial to prevent infection. Here are some tips to keep the area clean during the healing process:
1. Gentle Rinsing: After 24 hours post-surgery, you can start rinsing your mouth gently with warm salt water (a teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water) several times a day, especially after meals. This helps to keep the area clean and can reduce inflammation.

2. Avoiding Certain Foods: Stick to soft foods and avoid anything that could irritate the wound, such as crunchy, spicy, or hard foods. Foods that can easily get stuck in the extraction site, like rice or seeds, should be avoided as well.

3. Use of a Soft-Bristled Toothbrush: When brushing your teeth, be careful around the extraction site. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and avoid direct contact with the wound to prevent irritation.

4. Avoid Smoking and Alcohol: Both smoking and alcohol can hinder the healing process and increase the risk of complications, including dry socket, which is a painful condition that can occur if the blood clot at the extraction site dislodges.

5. Hydration: Stay hydrated, but avoid using straws for at least a week after the extraction, as the suction can dislodge the blood clot and delay healing.

Regarding your concern about food particles getting trapped in the wound and causing infection, it is a valid concern. While some food particles may indeed get lodged in the extraction site, the body has natural mechanisms to deal with minor debris. However, if you notice persistent pain, swelling, or any discharge from the site, these could be signs of infection, and you should seek dental care promptly.

In summary, while the initial healing of your wisdom tooth extraction site may take a couple of weeks, complete healing can take longer. Keeping the area clean, avoiding irritating foods, and following your dentist's post-operative care instructions will significantly contribute to a smooth recovery. If you have any concerns about your healing process, don’t hesitate to reach out to your dental professional for advice and reassurance.
