Acupoint issues?
Hello, doctor.
Could you please tell me which acupressure points can help with height growth? How should I apply pressure for the best effect? I’ve heard that one should feel soreness when pressing on acupressure points to achieve "Qi" flow for it to be effective.
How should I do this? I am currently 16 years old and would like to grow taller.
I am 160 cm and want to grow 5 cm.
I read online that it is still possible to grow before the age of 18.
Is that true? What details should I pay attention to in order to grow taller? Thank you.
Niming, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2015/09/08
Dr. Lai Jianhong reply Traditional Chinese Medicine
According to growth curves, at 16 years old, you have already surpassed the average height for females in Taiwan, so congratulations! As for whether there is still room for growth, a more professional assessment is needed, including imaging studies to determine bone age and a comprehensive evaluation of your constitution and vitality through traditional diagnostic methods.
Therefore, it is recommended that you consult a qualified Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practitioner for a differential diagnosis and treatment plan.
In the meantime, here are some details you can pay attention to:
1.
Avoid staying up late.
Sleeping after 11:00 PM can affect your autonomic nervous system and the secretion of growth hormones, which may limit your height.
2.
Engage in more jumping exercises.
These activities can enhance blood circulation and nourish the growth plates, potentially contributing to increased height.
3.
Reduce excessive sugar intake.
Consuming too many sweets can inhibit the secretion of growth hormones.
4.
Acupressure.
Points such as Yongquan (Kidney 1), Baihui (Governing Vessel 20), and Zusanli (Stomach 36) can aid in height growth.
If you experience stress or anxiety, you may also press on Taichong (Liver 3).
It is crucial to locate the acupoints accurately; if you are on the correct spot, you should feel a sensation of soreness or fullness without needing to apply excessive pressure.
You can use finger pressure or a gua sha tool; after applying pressure to an acupoint for about 10 seconds, release and rest for another 10 seconds, repeating this three times.
It is recommended to perform this in the morning and evening.
The above suggestions are general principles.
Since each individual's constitution is different, it is advisable to seek a diagnosis from a TCM practitioner for more tailored recommendations.
Thank you for your inquiry.

More Info
Acupressure is a traditional Chinese medicine technique that involves applying pressure to specific points on the body to promote healing and balance. While there is limited scientific evidence supporting the effectiveness of acupressure for height growth, some believe that stimulating certain acupressure points may help enhance overall well-being and potentially support growth during the teenage years.
For teenagers like yourself, who are 16 years old and looking to grow taller, it's important to understand that growth is primarily determined by genetics, nutrition, and overall health. The growth plates in your bones, which are responsible for height increase, typically close after puberty, around the ages of 16 to 18 for girls and 18 to 21 for boys. Since you are still within this window, there is still a possibility for you to grow taller, especially if your growth plates have not yet closed.
Acupressure Points for Height Growth
1. Yao Yan (Kidney Point): Located on the lower back, about 3 inches from the spine, this point is believed to support kidney health, which is traditionally associated with growth and vitality. To stimulate this point, use your thumbs to apply firm pressure for about 1-2 minutes.
2. Zusanli (Stomach Point): Found about four finger widths below the kneecap and one finger width to the outside of the shinbone, this point is thought to enhance digestion and overall health. Apply pressure here for 1-2 minutes, feeling a slight discomfort but not pain.
3. Sanyinjiao (Spleen Point): Located about four finger widths above the inner ankle bone, this point is believed to help with hormonal balance and overall growth. Press firmly for 1-2 minutes.
4. Taixi (Kidney 3): This point is located in the depression between the inner ankle bone and the Achilles tendon. It is thought to support kidney function, which is vital for growth. Apply pressure for 1-2 minutes.
Techniques for Effective Acupressure
- Pressure: Use your fingers or thumbs to apply firm, steady pressure to the acupressure points. You should feel a sensation of discomfort but not pain. If you feel pain, reduce the pressure.
- Duration: Hold the pressure for about 1-2 minutes on each point. You can repeat this process a few times a day.
- Breathing: While applying pressure, focus on your breathing. Deep, slow breaths can enhance relaxation and may improve the effectiveness of the technique.
- Consistency: Regular practice is key. Try to incorporate acupressure into your daily routine.
Additional Tips for Height Growth
1. Nutrition: Ensure you are consuming a balanced diet rich in essential nutrients. Focus on foods high in calcium, vitamin D, protein, and other vitamins and minerals that support bone health. Dairy products, leafy greens, nuts, fish, and lean meats are excellent choices.
2. Exercise: Engage in regular physical activity, especially exercises that promote stretching and posture, such as swimming, basketball, and yoga. These activities can help stimulate growth hormones and improve your overall posture.
3. Sleep: Prioritize getting adequate sleep each night. Growth hormone is primarily released during deep sleep, so aim for 8-10 hours of quality sleep.
4. Posture: Maintain good posture throughout the day. Slouching can compress your spine and make you appear shorter than you are.
5. Hydration: Drink plenty of water to keep your body hydrated, which is essential for overall health and growth.
6. Consult a Professional: If you have concerns about your growth or overall health, consider consulting a healthcare professional. They can provide personalized advice and check for any underlying health issues that may affect your growth.
In conclusion, while acupressure may offer some benefits, it should be combined with a holistic approach that includes proper nutrition, exercise, sleep, and good posture to maximize your potential for growth. Remember, genetics play a significant role in determining your final height, but taking care of your body can help you reach your full potential.
