Height increase issues?
Hello, doctor.
I would like to ask some questions about height increase.
I am currently 14, almost 15 years old, and I am in the third year of junior high school with a height of 141 cm.
During my junior high years, I haven't grown taller.
I have previously seen an orthopedic doctor, and my growth plates have already closed.
I also consulted an endocrinologist, and my hormone levels are normal, so it seems like there is little hope for further growth.
However, I came across a website today that mentioned Pilates exercises can help increase height, similar to yoga.
They claim that practicing yoga can reopen closed growth plates and allow for further height increase.
Is it possible to grow taller again?

Hello, the closure of the growth plate indicates that the bone in that area will no longer grow; however, other bones or soft tissues may still grow a little, but not significantly.
Exercise or yoga is beneficial for overall health, but there is no exercise or yoga that can reopen a closed growth plate.

The question of whether Pilates or yoga can help increase height after the growth plates have closed is a common concern, especially among adolescents. To address this, it's important to understand the biological processes involved in growth and the role of exercise in overall health.
Firstly, growth plates, also known as epiphyseal plates, are areas of cartilage located at the ends of long bones. These plates are responsible for the lengthening of bones during childhood and adolescence. In females, growth plates typically close around the ages of 16 to 18, while in males, they may close a bit later, around 18 to 21. Once these plates are closed, the bones can no longer grow in length, which means that height increase is no longer possible through natural growth processes.
The assertion that Pilates or yoga can "open" closed growth plates is a misconception. While these forms of exercise are excellent for improving flexibility, posture, and overall physical fitness, they do not have the capability to reverse the closure of growth plates. The closure is a natural part of the maturation process and is influenced by hormonal changes in the body, particularly the increase in sex hormones during puberty.
Engaging in Pilates or yoga can provide numerous health benefits. These exercises can enhance core strength, improve posture, and promote better alignment of the spine, which may create the appearance of being taller. Good posture can make a significant difference in how height is perceived, as slouching can make a person appear shorter than they are. Additionally, these exercises can help alleviate tension and stress, contributing to overall well-being.
It's also worth noting that while certain exercises, such as hanging from a bar (like doing pull-ups), are often suggested for height increase, they do not actually stimulate growth in closed growth plates. Instead, they may temporarily decompress the spine, which can lead to a slight increase in height that is not permanent.
For individuals who have already experienced growth plate closure, the focus should shift from trying to increase height to promoting overall health and fitness. This includes maintaining a balanced diet rich in essential nutrients, engaging in regular physical activity, and ensuring adequate sleep. Proper nutrition is crucial during the growth years, as it supports bone health and overall development.
In summary, while Pilates and yoga are beneficial for physical fitness and posture, they cannot increase height after growth plates have closed. Once the growth plates are fused, the potential for natural height increase is no longer present. If height concerns persist, it may be helpful to consult with a healthcare professional for guidance and to explore other aspects of health and wellness that can be improved.
