Unpleasant Odor from the Glans: Causes and When to See a Doctor - Urology

The glans has an unusual odor?

I have noticed a foul smell when I urinate, and when I'm not urinating, there is also an odor coming from the glans.
I have a foreskin issue but I ensure that I clean it properly.
Could this be a sign of urethritis or something similar? Should I see a doctor? Would drinking more water help? I also experience frequent urination because I tend to get nervous, which makes me go to the bathroom more often.

Unpleasant odor from the glans, especially when accompanied by symptoms like frequent urination or discomfort, can be concerning and may indicate an underlying issue that requires medical attention. The odor you are experiencing could be due to several factors, including infections, hygiene issues, or other medical conditions.

One common cause of an unpleasant odor from the glans is a condition known as balanitis, which is inflammation of the glans (the head of the penis). Balanitis can be caused by poor hygiene, leading to the accumulation of smegma (a combination of dead skin cells, oils, and moisture), or it can be due to infections, either fungal (like Candida) or bacterial. Symptoms of balanitis may include redness, swelling, itching, and an unpleasant odor.

Another possibility is a urinary tract infection (UTI), which can cause foul-smelling urine and may be associated with other symptoms such as burning during urination, increased frequency of urination, and abdominal discomfort. UTIs can occur in men, although they are more common in women. If the odor is accompanied by these symptoms, it would be prudent to consult a healthcare provider.

In some cases, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) such as gonorrhea or chlamydia can also lead to unusual odors and other symptoms. If you have had unprotected sexual contact, it is essential to consider this possibility and seek medical evaluation.

Regarding your question about whether drinking more water will help, staying well-hydrated can dilute your urine, which may reduce the concentration of substances that contribute to odor. However, if there is an underlying infection or another medical issue, simply increasing water intake may not resolve the problem.

It is important to see a doctor if you experience any of the following:
- Persistent or worsening odor
- Pain or discomfort in the genital area
- Changes in urination, such as increased frequency, urgency, or burning sensation
- Any discharge from the penis
- Fever or systemic symptoms
A healthcare provider can perform a thorough examination, possibly including urine tests or swabs, to determine the cause of the odor and recommend appropriate treatment. Treatment may involve antibiotics for infections, antifungal medications for yeast infections, or other therapies depending on the diagnosis.

In summary, while increased hydration may help with odor to some extent, it is crucial to address any underlying issues. If you are experiencing persistent symptoms or have concerns about your health, seeking medical advice is the best course of action. Early diagnosis and treatment can help prevent complications and ensure proper management of any potential conditions.
